I know there are a number of people using the 62 series, so here's a question:

The twist latch on the battery compartment of the brand new one I got for Christmas seems to be extremely difficult to turn, especially when locking. Way more difficult to turn than my 60 and I'm a little concerned that the 'handle' that turns it may break off with repeated usage. It's that difficult to turn.

Is this typical?

Mine turns really easy. Sounds like there is an issue with yours.

Send it to me. I will use it for you some and send it back when it is operating smoothly.

Mine turns pretty easily. Maybe you could check that the rubber seal is correctly located in its groove and everything is seated correctly, so that the handle is not trying to do too much work.

Mine was tight at first too but has loosened up quite a bit.

Problem with mine is that the batteries fit so tight I have to use a tool to pry them out when it's time to replace them. The 62 is also a power hog.

Yeah, the batteries really do snap in extremely tight. I put in a set of rechargables that I knew were not fully charged and the battery meter displays 100%. That seemed odd. One thing I do not like is that the battery level is not continuously displayed like the 60 was.........or can that be changed?

It does take a lot of effort to turn the lock. Long term, that mechanism seems like it will fail.

I'm still wavering about returning it for another.

Do you have the battery type set correctly in setup? If you have that set wrong, it won't display the battery level correctly.

As far as the lock, my turns smoothly.

Mine is like that. It shows 100% until about 30 seconds before they die. I've just kind of learned to live with it.

Ditto the rubber seal; mine was kind of hard to turn until I worked it in for a bit, but it wasn't so difficult that I worried about the metal latch busting off. That seems a bit extreme. I never had to use that much force.

Also, ditto about the batteries needing a tool. They are stuck in there good. I also once lost my city maps chip while replacing the batteries; luckily, BigChiefS4 and TonkaMN were with me and made the find on that one - think finding a nano in the woods was hard, try finding a black MicroSD card in the mud with no hints and no coordinates! Smile

If it's that difficult, I'd look at getting a replacement.

Exchange it for a 450. A very good unit that will get you where you need to be. And the battery cover will come off quick and easy with just your thumb. No screwing around with the cover.

I guess there was a reason many retailers were selling the 62's so cheap: http://gpsworld.com/garmin-introduces-gpsmap-64-series-outdoor-handheld/

With my find rate, it'll take me 250 years to find that many.
