I was recently accused of being a statist (I suspect he meant elitist) because one of my geocaches contains a QR barcode.

I want to make it perfectly clear.. if you come upon a QR barcode, or any other barcode out in the field, you do NOT require a smartphone to solve it. I understand that not everyone can afford a smartphone. But for God's sake, stop whining about it. If you have access to a camera and a computer with an internet connection (the stinking library), you too can decode a barcode for FREE. I do admit a smartphone makes it more convenient, but that does not mean smartphone-less geocachers are being left out in the cold. STOP WITH THE CLASS-WARFARE already and move on to the next cache.

Thank you for listening. Embarassed

What would he do if he came across a cache with over 50 QR barcodes in it? Tell him to find a friend. Most of my friends have smart phones

We did that cache, and we don't have a brilliant phone. I do have an iPad (no in the field internet access on it) I bought for my job, and that did the trick. I don't carry the thing in the field, but it was no big deal to go get it.

Not every cache will be for everyone. I am not SCUBA certified, but that doesn't mean I should be upset with someone who places that kind of cache. Those with the skills can enjoy them. And so on....

Ok Gwyn, I don't really want a new Vette. But I would love a new truck. The Tahoe is approaching 280,000 miles.

Why not? Just think of how fast you could get to new caches. Maybe be the new FTF king? Very Happy

No, I am past the FTF phase of my life. It was too elitist for me. Afterall, that requires premium membership. Shocked

Vette? I'd like a Cessna 182RG. In white. I have a premium membership. Does that mean I can get one?

I saw one upside down in some of the Illinois tornado pictures. I bet you could pick it up real cheap.

I've done the "take a picture, decode at home, come back for the final" thing before with QR codes. Believe it or not, there are some that my smartphone can't decode in the field.

Not any different from some of the older multis, where you went to field, got some information, had to go to the LIBRARY, decode it, and then come back another day for the final.

What, are "chirps" elitist, since you need a special GPSr to decode them?

I say ignore the naysayers; if they can't solve it,they can move along to those they can solve, just like other difficult puzzles.
