Something that has been bugging me for awhile is why isn't there a FAQ on the front page of the MNGCA about caching in MN? I am reading the hunting thread and I realize I have no idea what the MN hunting rules/locations/seasons are or where to find out if a cache is in the middle of hunting land or not. There have been a number of other subjects that have come up on forums over the last year that have caught me by surprise. Has this been discussed in the past?

Yes! an FAQ would be nice.
But as far as hunting goes just go get a hunting regulations book.
Here is a link to MN DNR site hunting regulations.
http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/regulations/hunting/index.html
You will find hunting is possible from September 1 to last day of Feb.
And then spring Turkey. But you will find that most people hunt
Sept. 1st to Nov. 30th then it starts to wind down.
There are a few diehards who go out till the end though.
As with anything use good judgement.

That's probably a safe bet. Smile

My suggestion, depending on how involved you wanted to get with a FAQ, would be to start with an outline.

My other suggestion would be to possibly make it a group effort, especially if you had an outline.

Oh, and thanks for volunteering. Wink

This is what I was thinking - a lot of these would be pointers to other websites:

Pointer to the Geocaching 101 page on geocaching.com

MN acronyms (WNC, mmcc, etc.)

MN Land use
1. hunting
2. X-country skiing
3. ATV trials
4. Snow mobile trials
5. Horseback trials
6. Biking paths

Logging etiquette
1. When to use "Needs Archive"
2. When to use "Needs Maintenance"
3. Cache repairs

Basic Searches

MN Wildlife
1. Bears
2. Wolves
3. Snakes
4. Mosquitoes
5. Any other insects of interest? (Spiders? - I am thinking more for someone from out of state).
6. Geese

Social Aspect (this would be basic etiquette, who is invited, etc)
1. WNC
2. MNGCA events
3. Published events

Places with loaner GPSes

?When should cachers contact MNGCA for help/advice/FYI for MNGCA?

?Police Interaction advice?

Dogs
1. State Park Policy
2. City Policy (More or less a statement saying check the city website).

?Useful Tools to carry?

SWAG
1. No food
2. Remember it probably will get frozen at some time
3. Family friendly

That's what I had so far.
Does this seem like something worth pursuing?

A couple items that could be added to the outline:
The links to county property maps currently in the forum could be moved to a FAQ section.
No explosives in swag.

Edited to add: Thanks to schmittfamily for putting this together. Good idea!

I would add "wild parsnip" to #6 under MN Wildlife. ..or maybe its own unique number. While not seen that much in the Cities, it has been known to run rampant down here in the South.

Thanks for putting this together! !!

If we wanted to to be friendly to out of towners, we might mention that pencils not pens are good due to freezing. It always throws me when I see pens in caches down south (like in Iowa)

I would suggest avoiding duplication of material already readily available from Groundspeak.

Not sure I agree. I don't spend time navigating the Groundspeak site other than looking for coordinates, reading logs or checking profiles. I do check the MnGCA site regularly however. If education is the goal, the more places it exists, the more people you'll reach.

Well, if all you do is quote what's in Groundspeak's FAQ, that would be a copyright violation. So now you have to restate them - with all the interpretation issues that raises. "But the MNGCA FAQ says..." isn't going to work when the real rules belong to Groundspeak. Frankly, I wouldn't expect it to hold sway with the MN reviewers, either. Far better to just have a link to the Groundspeak rules and be done with it.

If there are unique situations or etiquette here, that's fine. But don't cover the same territory without a good reason. It's extra work for dubious benefit at best.

I agree with both points made here. I wouldn't necessarily approach this with the attitude that if it is available at Groundspeak's FAQ, don't bother putting it here, because RudeRat is right - a lot of people maybe don't even know where GS's FAQ is, and there are probably many more locals that frequent this site much more regularly than GS's. However, to avoid the copyright issues and what not, I do love the idea of posting links to various answers rather than duplicating the answers themselves. That way you still get pointed to the right information here, but without the copyright issues.

If I remember correctly when we get the new website overhaul there will be a section addressing caching specific to MN. Has there been any progress on the new website?
