I never understood why some months it's 43 and others it's 17. Is it friend networks, campaigning, or interest just wavers that dramatically?

Networks and Campaigning...

Edit: Not that there is anything wrong with that...keep in mind...when voting in an election...we don't meet all the candidates prior to voting (some of us may...but not everyone) and still we vote.

I vote each and every month...but I don't visit all the caches. In that case, my vote is based on the nomination write-up, cache page description, logs, and...if any, my experience at the cache.

I have found a couple here and there, but my experience does not guarantee a vote...there have been several times where I voted for a cache I had not found.

In life...I have went to meet any politician for which my vote was cast...

It'd be nice if caches won COTM on merit alone rather than by tainted methods.

Depends on the definition of "Merit"...many have suggested the only "true" vote is by those that have found all the caches...

...but, as I contend above...we don't meet all our politicians...

I have to agree with this, but it seems to be the trend everywhere.

I remember when Kayla was a baby, everyone used to tell us that she was a "Gerber Baby" and we should enter her into cute baby contests and stuff. We did that exactly once before we figured out that those contests have ZERO to do with how cute your kid is but rather how many friends you can get to keep voting for your kid multiple times, which we were not in the interest of doing...

This isn't that bad in that at least you can only vote once, but I agree it would be nice if it was more "pure".

I was thinking interest in the nominees was the primary reason for the difference in vote totals. This month was an interesting and varied set of nominees.

I look at the COTM page every month. If they are caches I haven't found yet, I don't vote. If I see one(s) that I have found and think it is fits with COTM, I vote. So yes, I could see where months go by with little voting and then spike when more people have found the caches.

Yep. I don't vote unless I at least found one and found it worthy. I rarely have more than one of them found in a month. I bet it has a lot to do with cache locale and / or if it's puzzle. I think caches farther from the metro or puzzles have fewer finders and may have a harder time. Also the more caches up for consideration, the more people will have found one and want to vote for it.

Yes, there has to be something underhanded going on. After all, the caches are all the same age, and the same number of cachers have found all three of them.
