|
|
I was doing my usual lurking in the #geocache IRC channel and they were discussing cache dense areas... Apparently they were talking about this thread on the geocaching.com Forum...
Marky's suggestion was to take the total number of caches in a 4 mile radius around your zipcode and divide the total by 100. Double the result and you will "get the average number of caches per square mile".
Within four miles of 55337 there are 37 caches / 100 = .37, doubled = .74.
Within four miles of my home coordinates (N 44° 47.470 W 093° 14.725) there are 39 caches / 100 = .39, doubled = .78.
Knowing KB's home coordinates (give or take a few feet of center ) I calculated his area's cache density
Within four miles of N 45° 03.092 W 093° 15.403 there are 49 caches / 100 = .49, doubled - .98. I was expecting more out of the King
What do you guys find around the metro? _________________ Sad state of affairs.

OK, let's see what's available:
LaBelle Park, McKenna Park, Mathaire Park, Gauvitte Park, Ostrander Park, Keyes Park, Huset Park (East), Hart Lake
That's just Columbia Heights.
Expand a bit and these would still be under 4 miles:
Waite Park, Driftwood Park, Commons Park, Community Park, Central Park, Silver Oaks Park, Emerald Park, Hansen Park, Southwest Park, Deming Heights Park
and that's not even going across the river. |

From 55103 = 49
So .98
Not nearly as dense as I often thought
My cabin is near a border of twnshp's as well as counties, so depending on who you ask, either zip can be correct- even though we are not in either Clam Falls or Luck.
54837 & 54853
2 (both mine) =.04 & 0/0.00
I have to get busy! |

I'm more than four miles from my zip code center. From my home (not a cabin): .08
If it weren't for team-deadhead: .02
Thanks team-deadhead!
Thanks Thomasina and Marksman!
Edit: That's kind of scary that KB can rattle off 18 parks without crossing the river??

From "Oxbow Park", the closest cache to my home in Champlin:
33 caches = .66 caches per sq mi.
This is a little misleading, however, since many of them are across the Mississippi River and much more than 4 miles to get to by any mode other than helicopter. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! You in the bushes."

You're a geo-stud. You can just use your Moejo to get over there in a single bound, right? _________________ Sad state of affairs. |
