An arcticle appeared on slashdot.org today... It was supposedly by someone in Search and Rescue that wanted to know the "paranoid's" comments about a system erected in the woods to track hikers in case they get lost. See the article and replies here. My reply to this topic was this.
What do you guys think? _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

| It's a good idea, but I wouldn't make the tracking data public access. It should be a propietary system so, as mentioned, malicious people can not take advantage of it. |

I hate to say it ...but it's a dumb idea...
think about it ...
If your going to get really lost...its because you went of the trail...then kept moving....and moved even further ....and kept moving some more....
this will just tell you a remote Idea as to where on the trail the idiot left. |

sounds like a new way to people count. If a trail gets overaverage use, they start thinking about upping the parking fees for certain areas.
I say give the directionally challenged tracking buttons or something, that way if they get lost, it's an easy find. |

Little homing tags? That beep louder and faster the closer you get back to base?
How about just hand everyone a Geko |

| Nah like the ones they put on animals when they want to track their movements. Don't want to startle the poor hikers with things that make noise or try to tell them where they need to go. |
