Have had quite a few encounters with LEO's and to date only one was somewhat "uncomfortable". We were doing a bit of night Caching looking for one of the Harry Potter Series Caches in Rochester near the prison (yes you probably know the one). While trying to dodge below the berm everytime the patrol car went past and still search the pine tree for the Cache, I must have mis-timed a duck and got nailed! My best Geocaching 101 had no effect what so ever on this very humorless patrolman. Rolling Eyes

Needless to say, we had to come back during the day and make the quick find. Best experience was when a patrolman actually helped look for the Cache! Laughing

Aitkin PD once... Positive experience.

And Bloomington PD once - although, as one of their dispatchers it was not too difficult to "talk my way out" of that one! Wink

Only once at that was a long time ago.
I and a few other FTF hounds were looking in a Pine Tree in Lakeville when the LPD pulls up and asked us what we were doing. Lucky thing the collector new the guy. So he pulled the car over faceing the tree and put every light he had on the car on the tree. It was still a DNF that night but I did go back the next day and find it. But you got to love it when the PD helps.

yep only it was secret service and nothing positive came from it, they have no sense of humor. Never did find the cache I was going after , just turned around and went home.

Stopped by the Maryland State Police once as I was walking out of the woods with my (then) nine year old daughter. Someone thought I was doing something nefarious.

I would normally say "sadly, yes"...but since I am not the ONLY one who has had this problem, I am cool with saying..."YEP!!"

It happened one lovely evening...while trying to be FTF, I forgot the little thing called "park hours". Hubby doesn't make it back from work till close to 11, so we figured out who was going for which cache, and off I went. As I pulled into the parking area around GZ, I noticed the sign..figured I was there, would make the find, and then boogie out. I realized I needed a flashlight (didn't have that app on my phone yet), so I used the light from my phone, while looking up the cache to see if there were any FTFs I didn't know about. Sure enough, there was one...so I got back into my car, took the GPS off my neck, keys in the ignition buckled up...just in time to look up and see one of Albert Lea's finest coming in behind me. He asked me what I was doing, and I held up the GPS and told him I was on a quest for First to Find. He gave me a look like I had lost it, asked me why, and I told him I was Geocaching. I then explained it, as he had the bewildered look on his face. He then informed me the park closed at 10:30 (it was 11:45), and wished me a good night. He shook his head as he drove off. Not one week later, I heard a call come across the scanner of a couple of older guys busy looking around a local business, and then the officer came back on saying everything was ok, as they were just geocaching, and he had to help them find their GZ.

Then there was the time we were caching in Rochester..in front of a Sheriff deputy...who just watched....and averted his eyes once my husband made the grab....gotta love officers like that Laughing

No, but in Ohio I did have a sheriff's deputy ask me if OtherHalf and I had found the cache we had just left, as he had been unable to find it!

I've had probably close to ten encounters with law enforcement while geocaching and this is one of the more memorable ones. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LUID=86bf241f-24cd-433c-a58e-8e92b0f18450 It was on the narrow pedestrian bridge crossing 212 in Chanhassen right next to the new High School. Not enough room on the bridge for both me an the car. I couldn't give away the location then without giving away the puzzle. Seeing that fast car coming toward me in the dark with only one direction to go made me turn and run. It turned out well as all of my encounters have.
