Both of them are premium members. I wonder how you were able to see it?
It was MY finds for 5 years, right? I was able to do a pocket query which generated them. |
I can see it also using a top secret trick  You called the PQ "FiveYearsMN1" If you just click edit, it opens the PQ and allows us to run it as our own with the filter options you had. |

| I wonder if it'll be 20,000 sometime in January. I think the rate of geocaching slows down in the winter. Cache-O-Mania for sure though! That's something to be proud of! |

I don't know. I'd be more proud of 10,000 well thought-out caches in nice parks as opposed to 20,000 caches in bus shelters and parking lots.

Ditto. I'm not going to lie: I've only been caching for just over a month and I'm already sick of bird houses and parking lot light posts. What's the sport in that when I know where it is before I get out of the car? |

I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, as I had nothing to do with those hides... I'm just sick of finding so many of them; it gets monotonous after a while. Which was Moe's original point: "quality over quantity" |

| Waldo, I think what he means is you need to study the map a little closer to find the caches that involve more hiking. Look in some of the bigger parks. Murphy Hanrahan had over 30 caches, to do them all involves about 15 miles of walking. That's just an example. |

I don't think that's really the point being made though. Most geocachers are out to get as many caches as possible. If I wanted to do every cache in a certain town, why would I avoid these? I'm still going to do it, because the obsessive compulsive in me can't stand a cache symbol in the midst of all those smilies.
The point was that rather than simply 'spamming' out caches, why can't we make them unique in some way (maybe power trails excluded)? Whether it's by hide or history or scenery, etc...
What's the purpose of a birdhouse hide in plain view 15 feet off a highway in the middle of nowhere that has a description that simply reads "This is my 1,467th hide." There's nothing mildly entertaining or sporting about it, and it almost becomes an inconvenience.
Maybe it's a bit too 'existentialist' for some of you, but that's just the way I look at it.
I guess what I still don't understand is why I am being told that I need to put more thought into my planning. That's got really nothing to do with it, as the hide is there whether I go to it or not... I do plenty of hiking caches, but that doesn't negate the fact that these others still exist.
Just my opinion. |

I guess we think you need more planning, because you are complaining about skirt lifters and the other urban hides. Now you say you are going to find them anyway, because you can't stand to see one in your area not found.
If you don't like them, don't find them, but don't go crying to us if you do. If you're after numbers, and apparently you are, search them out, log the find, and go on to the next. |

But this thread wasn't originally about how to plan your outings to sort out the kinds of finds you enjoy. The original point of this thread was whether or not we should be proud of the quantity of caches hidden in the state whether or not they are quality caches.

The cool thing about geocaching is that there's something for everyone. But it's important to not let what YOU don't like get in the way of your fun.
I do agree that there are too many people not dedicated to the sport planting "crap" out there. But since I can't control it, I make the best of it by finding caches that satisfy me. |

BTW, the point of the topic might be a highly emotional one for some, but at the end of the day, the point is mute. The caches are what they are. |

I agree. I too think that 10000 well planned out caches is better than 20000 quick ones. I agree that most caches I find are in 2 seconds. 10000 is STILL a number to be proud of. And 10000 cool challenging caches is even better.
I do disagree at the same time though. I think that all the beginners need easy caches too. I mean I was pumped when I found my first cache (in a stump) and back then that was pretty tricky.
So I think we need a nice balance and plus people with 10,000 finds wouldn't have as many. I think that it should me a 1/4 easy to 3/4 a little more fun hides. That would be very fun.
Austin has a nice balance and I enjoy finding both types.
