| I recently tried to publish a puzzle cache and it was denied just because I said "NOT AT POSTED COORDINATES (but you can get ice cream there)." I think that's a bit extreme. I didn't name the business and wasn't trying to promote it either. I just needed to specify some bogus coordinates and decided to use an ice cream place because it's a kid themed puzzle. |
I agree that's a pretty strict interpretation of the no commercialism clause. |
How can a statement that suggests that people can enter the nearby business to buy their product be considered anything but commercial?? |
I don't know... ask Surfer Joe.
Seriously... in the context of Bart's original thread, I will be cynical and say that it all has to do with Groundspeak's pocketbook. Commercial is fine if it brings income, otherwise not. From what I've seen "they" have always been like that, from day one. Jeremy is in business. He is out to make money. I can't blame him for that, but it does get in the way of some supposed ethics. _________________ Alcohol & calculus don't mix. Don't drink & deriv |

I don't see why you consider that cynical.. It seems like good business sense. There's no ethics involved. |

To be honest, I have no personal problem with Groundspeak's position with WhereIGo's or even this CHIRP device. I even stand by their right to govern what is or isn't commercial. I am more or less using this as another example of inconsistency. When it comes down to it, perhaps I am still agitated (read, NOT angry) that I was required to remove certain very benign language from an event listing when I see contradictions being published everyday. |

I think they are talking about using the company name in the title as the issue. |

I also think their parking lot has signs that say "Kowalski's Parking Only" or "Customer Parking Only," but I'm not sure. My budget is more Target and Cooper's than Kowalski's, Byerly's and Lund's. It's currently the closest unfound cache that isn't on my ignore list, so I'll check it out sometime today. _________________ There comes a time in every young boy's life when he gets an irresistible urge to seek buried treasure.--Mark Twain |

Yepper.
Using the term "Kowalski's" is ok but using the phrase "the canoe rental place in town" wasn't ok. |

For those keeping track, this is mistake #1. (I'd rather we not start a thread keeping track of all of my mistakes ) I sure hope you weren't all expecting someone perfect in this job...
I can tell you that it would make my job easier if you email me when I biff it so I have a chance to fix the problem before you drag it through a public forum. |

Actually, I would not consider the Kowalki's a mistake. I consider my situation the mistake. But who's keeping track. |

| The only problem I have with this one is that it wasn't the one down the road from me. |

Don't shoot the messenger.
After a discussion amongst reviewers and Groundspeak folks, I feel the need to clarify what Groundspeak's guidelines are regarding commercial caches (especially how they apply to events).
Don't shoot the messenger.
My questions were:
What about the a picture of the business or it's sign out front?
A picture of, say, the menu?
The food that they offer?
What about a generic picture that COULD be the food they offer?
Basically the conversation ended at the idea that anything beyond name and address of the restaurant, and perhaps a couple of words about the type of food served, is not permitted.
I don't really recall caches/events after I publish them, so I can't bring to mind anything at the moment that didn't follow this (nor does it matter), but from this point forward I'll be sticking closer to these requirements as I understand them better. Fair warning.

So my picture of an empty pizza pan with the phrase "Don't miss it!" on the event page for the next pizza night is out of the question? Where are these other reviewers from? Go to other states and they publish anything including logos, you don't have to live within 100 miles of the cache or have a sponsor if you don't, and having a business name in the cache title is okay. Why such a different set of rules in different states? |
