Does anybody know a place where you can rent GPS units? A friend of mine is interested in taking a girl scout troop geocaching and asked me if I knew of any place where you could rent several units. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not aware of, but I'm sure there are some, commercial retailers that rent GPSrs. However, in this case, I would recommend they contact a local boy scout troop. BSA has recently added geocaching badges and many troops have GPSrs that are owned by the BSA. They may be able to borrow them from the troop. I did a class a while back and the person that put it together was able to borrow a dozen from the local troop.

I know the St. Croix Valley girl scouts have 20 or so GPSrs available for troops. That's what my daughter's troop used when the young ladies went out and found Coughin Up A Lung. Perhaps your area office could contact the St. Croix Valley office and see if you can take them on loan? It's worth asking anyway.

BTW, those 9 and 10 year old girls weren't afraid of the geocache like those 15 year old boys were. What wimps.

Depending on the size of your troop could you borrow from the parks and just do the caches in that park? Is it the state or Three Rivers that has the loaners? (or both)

My girls love going geocaching -- actually what they like best is when we split the troop into 2 groups and one hides and the other finds a temp cache, then they switch. That way we just need one or two GPSer. We do that every time we go camping.

A few of the state parks are GPS demo parks with GPS units people can use for free. You'd have to go to their website to see what parks have these, but in/near the Twin Cities Snelling, Afton and Wm. O'Brien are demo parks.

Thanks, everybody! I've sent the person the URL to this thread. If you have any additional suggestions, I'm sure she'd be glad to hear them.
