| I usually don't complain, but the past few days Geocaching.com is taking forever to load. I use Mozilla as the main browser and even that takes a while. One would think an organization like that would get their s*** together and spring for at least a T3. I may not renew my subscription next year either. |

The size of Jeremy's hose is the least of his problems.
If you watch carefully, IF the database doesn't timeout from all the excessive lock hold times, throw an exception from defective programming, or otherwise cough up its skull, the actual *delivery* of the bytes - ones the pages that are static are dynamically rendered, etc. - is reasonably spiffy. Bandwidth off the site isn't the problem.
Of course, when one page in 4 returns a database error and the other 3 are congested upon retrieval, formatting, and converting 217 byte long GUIDs into single digit integers, the data going into the hose itself is sort of self-regulating...
A local (non-techie) asked me what a server farm was since that was hailed as the solution to the mothership's instability. I explained it like this:
It's the afternoon of Christmas eve at Toys-R-Us. The checkout line is to the back of the store and starting to creep into the alley. The one checkout lane that's open is staffed by a 17 year old learning-disabled trainee.
With the current architecture, moving to a server farm adds more 17 year old trainees. |

You're giving his code more kudos than it deserves. I figured they were more like 12 year olds working illegally and under the table. They sometimes have to hide if they feel they are being watched. _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

His wife may disagree with you. She might think it is his biggest problem.

Hi Mike:
I realize this is a great problem for you (and I).
But the problem is not on my end!
More often than I like, Groundspeak sends me Pocket Queries that are stale -- missing the most recent logs. The ones they sent me last night 8/6 at 23:46 PST had cache logs only up to 8/4.
We will just have to sit tight until Jeremy kicks the PQ machine and gets it to send the most recent logs.
