| Does anyone know if the oldest cache (TerryAll) in Colorado survived all the fires that went through? We are heading down there in September and want to pick that one up as well as several other state oldest. We are up to 15 state oldest right now. Planning on grabbing 5 more on our trip down south in September. |

Someone found it yesterday. But read the logs. The original orange 5 gallon pail is gone and it's now a micro.
This was one of the more memorable OLDEST caches I've done. My wife didn't appreciate the offroading in her minivan when I approached the cache from the wrong direction. |

BTW, that hill you climb to this cache doesn't look all bad until you realize you're at 8200 feet.. |

HEH - I wonder if I followed the roads to "TerryAll" that you did Bart. That was a great drive, really enjoyed those dirt roads, and reminded me of adventures out in CA growing up... Laughed my butt off when we got to GZ and watched cars go zooming by... FUN times...

Not sure. Unfortunately, I had my wife's van with me when I did that cache. Had I been driving my Tahoe, you can be assured that I would have taken the scenic route. |

Can anyone tell me what the oldest caches for Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. We have a family vacation at the end of summer in those area's.

This is what found:
Idaho - gc25 (note gc26 and gc27 appear active as well and hid 4 days later)
Montana - gc492 and gc493
Wyoming - ??? The list I found had an archived cache. |

You can't always just go by the placement date. I can easily put a placement date of May 30, 2000 on a cache I place today.

Yes, in this case. But there are instances, such as in Ohio, where one cache has a lower GC Code, but wasn't published/reviewed/placed until after another cache with a higher GC Code. It gets tricky trying to determine the "oldest" cache and there's no question that some debate exists from state to state of which is the oldest.
Another example is in South Dakota where the original was archived and then years later a new cache, same place, same name with the original placement date was placed trying to claim to still be the oldest active cache in the state.
In putting together my bookmark list which I've shared, I tried to do as much research as possible by contacting some of that state's earliest catchers and reviewers. It was amazing the wealth of info some reviewers had on that topic for their state. |

| About 15 of us Minnesota geocachers were part of the armada to Power Island to do Michigan's oldest geocache (GC35) this last weekend. What a sweet experience. |

That's not always the case. Here are some of the oldest caches I've found. There is sometimes a discrepancy between the GC number and the placed date.
2000-05-13 GC28 Beverly (IL)
2000-06-20 GC37 Missouri's First - Watts Mill (MO)
2000-06-27 GC1B Gorilla Stash (AR)
2000-07-16 GC35 Power Island (MI)
2000-08-21 GC36 Geocache 612 (MI)
GC37 was placed before GC35, GC36 and GC1B. |
