For those who donít hunt, tomorrow ( Nov. 8 ) is the Minnesota deer hunting opener. Blaze orange in the woods is a good idea. For the non hunters out there, you donít look like a deer. We wonít shoot you. You may however jump a deer that runs past a nearby hunter resulting is nearby shots. Slamming a car door or a bump of the horn lets a hunter know someone else is in the area. If you see a hunter, give a friendly wave to make sure he sees you. Go ask him where other hunters are. Before 9:00am and after 3:30pm are the serious hunting hours when most hunters prefer not to be disturbed. Between those hours, youíre looking at some bored guy or gal sitting in a tree who may enjoy a chat about geocaching. They certainly would enjoy knowing youíre not another hunter whoís going to cut them off. If you walk in on a hunter, it is courteous to walk out the way you walked in. Hunters on public land know they are not alone making them extra cautious. Nobody wants to shoot someone. If you donít look like a deer, sneak around a hunter like a deer, flash the color white like a deer or jump in front of a car like a deer, youíll be just fine in the woods.

I forgot to mention, if you want to see deer hunters out of their element, pop into a rural grocery store this afternoon or evening. They are the ones with the orange hats pushing a cart of unrelated foods collected in a hunter gatherer style by a pack of males of up to 5 members. Be sure to note the lack of vegetables as you count the egg cartons buried under the family pack of snickers bars.

Agreed! Friday evening of deer opener may have been the most entertaining evening of the year while working at the grocery store in high school.
