Trash

Any time there's a large mass of people in an area, and especially in a relatively small area, a certain percentage of them are going to litter and a certain percentage of them will have little regard for the "landscape".

In 1998, when the Cooler Crew originated, the first "event" after the Re-Hash Bash was on Earth Day. A few people returned to Cherokee Park, to clean up the litter.

In 1999, the same thing occurred at Conway. It kind of died off after that.

My point is that there are people who care, and are willing to help out. I may try to start that up again this year.

While I'm only aware of five geocachers who participated in the Medallion Hunt, maybe a CITO effort on Sunday would inspire others?

You know, I don't think its a very good idea to rile up the press about the medallion hunt.

If they run a story, regardless whether or not geocaching is mentioned, some people are going to make a connection between medallion hunting and geocaching. We could end up getting lumped in with the "bad" kind of hunting.

I am wondering how a real donut would stay in a same place for 12 days without any animal taking it. It almost makes we want to try a test. Everyone I talked to yesterday seems to ask the same question.

I talked to my gf about the same exact thing. A) how the heck did 3000+ people miss a "gooey green frosted donut" and B) how the heck did 1+ animal miss the same exact thing.

Something is awfully fishy.

i hate to soundike a snobby print journalist, but if anybody connected with geocaching is referenced in any sort of broadcast journalism story about the medallion hunt carnage, there's a decent chance geocaching and seek-and-destroy medallion hunters will be lumped together. that could easily happen in a print journalism story, too, but you tend to get more detail in print, so you have a better chance of a geocacher explaining the difference between the two activities.

if a geocacher is expressing concern about the medallion hunt, i think the geocaching background is relevant.

but perhaps the best people to quote for a story such as this would be those who use the park throughout the year and are left to live with the carnage of the hunt.

geocaching is also relevant if it takes a CITO event to clean up the park. obviously KB's comments, as a longtime medallion hunter and avid geocacher, would be valuable for any such story on the carnage.

i didn't catch much morning news, but i did see a couple snipets on the medallion find during the 10 p.m. newscasts last night, but no mention of the seek-and-destroy mentality of many hunters. the more i think about KB's comments the more i think that any story about the carnage should also reference why this is happening. again, KB would be a good spokesperson about this. if nothing else, he should be submitting his thoughts via a letter to the editor of the pioneer press.

a much better writer is working on that already. If he determines that more letters would be good, he'll let me know.

I don't remember the reference to bonfires, but they're legal, and a tradition in long-lasting hunts. The problem would be if people don't bring their own wood. I know many who do, and I acknowledge that probably the majority don't.

I also caught the tease (or the bane of 2nd shift workers all over the cities--it seems the noon news spends more time telling us what's coming up at 5 instead of giving us the full story) on 'CCO's noon news, so I'll be tuned in this evening to see what they have to say.

Very very very interesting..... wow, the power of the Internet, I suppose. Even though I'm leaning more now with what RickRich said... I'm very interested to see how it all pans out. My friend is going to try to have it TiVo'ed tonight... and unfortunately I'm going to be away from a TV most of the weekend.

Any tech-geeks out there have video capture and export to mpeg?

Thanks to everyone that helped put this on WCCO's radar. We'll see how they choose to report it.

Another geocacher pointed me to this video... this shows you a little example of the number of people at Phalen recently... the middle-to-end bits of it probably the best parts.

Windows Media Player required, unfortunately.
