Hi,
My Explorist 500 has lost all of its caches in internal memory several times. After the first time I started backing it up to my PC. But now it is not being recognized by any PC as an external device . I have tried different PCs and Different USB ports on the PCs.
Does anybody have any thing I could try to get it recognized ?
Thanks,
CachingGrandpa |

I guess the first thing that I would try is to clean all of the posts and the contacts on the back of the GPS. And the ones on the cable.
This may not be it it may be a problem with the GPS. I have not had this problem yet with mine.
You will find that Magellan has now discontinued makeing and working on thease units. They will however take them as a traid and give you a deep sidcount on a newer model.
I hope the cleaning helps as I would have to say I like theae older ones better.
But I'm one of the only Magellan fans on this forum. _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

There might be a reason why Magellan is getting out of the handheld GPS business.. |

Those who have never used the 500 have no idea how nice it is. Best value for the price in my opinion.
Concerning your problem, have you installed the latest firmware version? Version 2.03 or 2.18 are the latest depending on your unit. The install software will guide you to the right one. If you are running Vista, there is a driver update as well. To get the updates, go to http://www.magellangps.com/support/ and enter your product and model (eXplorist series / 500 North America).
Also, be sure to use the Magellan Geocache Manager to load them onto your eXplorist 500.
Just to make sure it is not a simple and common mistake, when you hook it up to the USB cable, make sure the coard is going down toward the base, not up to the top.
I Hope you find this more helpful than some previous posts. _________________ Ahhhhhhhh, the power of cheese! |

USB cables are keyed. How would doing it wrong be possible? |

| The 500 uses a usb to I believe five pin inter face with a small tightening screw in the middle of the cluster. And if you look at it, you would think the cord should travel to the top of the gps when in fact the cord should be facing down ward. A common mistake on that model. We had two of them years ago. Rude rat is on the right track. And of course the firmware update will help as well. |
