I recieved a long distance call from an older brother this evening saying he has tried out this geocaching thing, and was looking for advice on what to buy for a gps. If he takes to the hobby, that will make four of the six siblings in my family, a niece in CA, a cousin, and a nephew, who are active cachers.

I'm wondering how extensive a family activity this is for other extended families. I'm keeping this to seperate households, not counting my teenaged kids who live with me but have their own ID's, and am not counting my cousins adult kids who also cache.

My parents (sunrisers) are cachers, as well as 6 of 7 of us "kids" of theirs (blue2 and the old jarhead, Gone Astray,
Mother, Jugs & Speed, Gone-Awry, GeoBobber, and Myself).
And on the third generation we have so far, Random Dan, Team Dobbi, & Eagle93. I may be missing some.

I met Eagle93, 3-4 weeks ago. Very nice Family, although mom doesn't seem to be interested in caching like dad and the kid's are.

My lady (Shvllady) & I (The Hipster) started together last fall; I started my brother & his family shortly thereafter (Dakota Vikings). A month later I was visiting relatives in Alexandria & my first Cuz and his lady picked up on my enthusiasm. (Terminal Velocity 99). This summer my sister from Norway was wondering what is was all about - now she is the (Prancin'pig Potter).

I think it sort of becomes a self fullfilling prophecy. Once one member of a family gets excited about the activity, it just naturally flows through the rest. Family outings, reunions & trips lend themselves to shared experiences; Geocaching becomes one of those.

Two sisters cache a little. One is single, the other has a family of four who cache under one username.

Bump...

The caching family is growing!

Me,
My wife,
4 out of 5 of my siblings, all over Minnesota,
2 out of 3 of my children, Grand Rapids to St. Paul,
A nephew and a niece, Bemidji and Grand Forks,
3 cousins (that I know of) in Minnesota, Texas, and North Dakota

have geocaching.com com accounts. Yes, we have had unactivated travel bugs as Bingo prizes at Christmas.

Who else has geocachers in the family?

I have a ten year old nephew who likes the “big ones” and hates micros.

He has a cousin the same age that’s got the bug. She will go with me to find any geocache and climb any sign post for a micro that’s out of my reach. When we get to GZ she will ask what size and is it a magnetic, whatever it takes to find it.

She has geosense beyond her years. We once arrived at a tennis court hide and as I checked out the chain link fence, I hear her yell out I found it. Sure enough she found it right in the court in a drain hole that had a cover over it. The first place she looked.

Two of my three girls have a tremendous geo-sense but neither one cares about putting it to work for me in the woods unless forced. Crying or Very sad

My aunt yonder over in Michigan caches, I didn't find that out until I was explaining geocaching to my Grandmother, she said "yeah I know, Laurie does that."

Over the years I've introduced a lot of people to caching. Of my family, I believe I have 4 cousins (and their families, one of which is pretty active), an uncle, and my dad.

I have a cousin who goes, but most of the rest only go with me. I have friends too who only go with me, one almost weekly who is now a better finder than me but still never logs.
