Thanks for posting that Matt.
I hope this document helps to clear up some concerns and questions. I'll be in touch early next week about the meeting in Detroit Lakes.
If you have further questions, please post.
Have a good weekend. |

| I might be interested in this. I was doing some of it informally as I hunted for the BM challenge and kept finding the pink signs. One thing I think we should be doing is getting waypoints for them as we search. I have found many of the benchmarks in the GC.com database to be off by quite a bit. |

Dave Zenk, NGS Advisor, and I will be heading to Detroit Lakes for a meeting on geocaching, on Thursday, December 11, 2008 at 4:30 pm - weather permitting. The meeting will take place at the Clubhouse Inn (formerly Holiday Inn) on the east end of town on Big Detroit Lake and just off Hwy. 10.
Although a late notice, your attendance and input would be appreciated. Hope to see some of you there.

| Yes, I would be interested. I report to the NGS when I can. I have not found an easy way to report recoveries to the state of Minnesota. |

O of course I would do it! I look for benchmarks anyways. I think it would be a cool thing that geocachers could do to help out along the way too |

That would be great, hopefully they are planning on being more up to date and have some kind of resources available.
CACHE ON or BENCHMARK ON.... Whatever |

| I guess this died. Does anyone know how to report a broken disk? It's from 2007 and is not listed on geocaching.com |

For a MN DOT disk, I'd look around on their website for info on how to report that ( www.dot.state.mn.us ) and for a Ramsey County, Hennepin County, etc. I'd look for the county surveyor on the county website (the standard url format for most MN counties is www.co.ramsey.mn.us , www.co.hennepin.mn.us , etc.) _________________ There comes a time in every young boy's life when he gets an irresistible urge to seek buried treasure.--Mark Twain |

You want someone in the geodetics unit at Mn/DOT. John Barke is the supervisor, and Dave Zenk is the state advisor for the NGS. Both are listed on the surveying contacts page. Might not work in your preferred browser.
There's not a way to recover marks online. OTOH, sending photos is not a two-step process.
Ideally, you would make a printout of the datasheet for the mark, write your corrections or observations on it, and send with digital photos. For larger counties with multiple sheets, there is a map of the sheet numbering system (PDF). |
