Is your friend's name Curt? Do you mean he's a cheapskate or that he wants to commit a felony? |

Depending on what he wants to do with it, http://www.openstreetmap.org/ has a free user generated set of maps that are pretty good. You need to use their api and some fancy trickery but you can generate garmin maps from them for free.
The Downside is that I don't think you can do driving directions with them, it is just a map. |

Correct, you can't route using these maps and they are very patchy. Some areas are ok other, not so. Also how they "make" the maps is a bit suspicious. It amounts to someone drying the road and uploading their track log. Not necessarily the best way to build maps.
Your pretty much SOL for finding good free maps to download to any gps unit. I'll give TomTom some kudos on making their updates free. The Garmin updates are only about $75 and they have some new program which, I think is a subscription based map update. That might be cheaper, but I don't know for sure. _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |

Thats not entirely true. That used to be the way they did it, but now they are getting it via TIGER data, and it is pretty accurate. |

You soon might not have a choice. See other thread about Magellan. You'll be forced into buying a higher quality device.. |

Ok, they must have just started that. It wasn't that long ago that I looked at the data and it was marginal because of how they acquired it. I still don't believe it's routable though. _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |

I first noticed the tiger data several months ago, around February
I just heard on the AU podcast that someone has come up with a way to make the OSM maps routeable. I haven't tried it yet, but here is a link to that info:
