| Not sure why it bothers me enough to post this thread, I know it's stupid. On more than one cache listing occasion this weekend I've seen the word coordinates written as co-ordinates. I am wondering out loud why people spell it like that? Don't bother lambasting me, I am not bothered THAT much. I am more curious than anything else. |

Those who have done my "Witch Weigh Is Rite" cache probably have figured out that stuff like this bugs me too. The right way is the right way. _________________ Sig line? I don't need no stinking sig line! |

I'll bet you hate "divide by one-third" too. |

I did look it up after my post. I don't ever remember it being spelled like this in all of my math background, but I'll reluctantly accept it. |

Actually I like "divide by one-third" because it means what it says and because it doesn't mean what it sounds like. I also like the term "easternmost" for the same reason. _________________ Sig line? I don't need no stinking sig line! |

I'll bet you really love it when The New Yorker spells this word with a diaeresis (looks like an umlaut) over the second "o". You do subscribe to The New Yorker, don't you?

I'm required by law, as an occasional teacher of mathematics to elementary teachers, to post this:
12 divided by 3 = 4:
12 objects distributed into 3 boxes = 4 objects per box.
12 divided by 1/3 = 36:
12 objects distributed into 1/3 of a box = 36 objects per box.
I find that compelling, but in my experience I can't say that elementary students or elementary teachers do. |

I'm guessing the word was probably originally made from the two words 'coordinated ordinals' or 'coupled ordinals' which may have been originally hyphenated at the time they were first used together.
I'll take co-ordinates or coordinates over two words any day. I prefer coordinates. _________________ The Lucid Network (tm)-- More Bars in More Places! |

I suppose you do not subscribe to the belief that if you cannot write in proper English then you shouldn't write at all? _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

I've never quite understood the point of saying ax. It's like they want to be seen as stupid.
I use coordinates, not co-ordinates. |

"Ax" is a common mispronunciation, but I don't think it's anything significant. Midwesterners pronounce "our" as "are". Texans pronounce "right" as "rat". Pretty much the same thing. _________________ Sig line? I don't need no stinking sig line! |
