Now with KB's new Cache a Year Challenge, some of you are in the same boat as me where you've got a cache every year but 2000.
Let's plan a road cruise to Orr to pick up Alvin's Phone Line, the first and oldest cache in MN. I can drive if anyone wants to ride along and chip in for fuel. I can seat up to 6 comfortably. I can seat nine if we all want to form a close intimate relationship. |

Is it really that bad up there right now? Bad enough that snowshoes couldn't overrcome it? |

I have never snowshoed so I don't know but when I was there in March of 2005 I stepped off the snowmobile trail on the side of the road and was in waist deep snow. The dog jumped off with me and ended up completely under the snow. We had 3 to 5" in the Metro so I incorrectly figured it couldn't be more than knee deep in Orr.
I wasn't prepared for that kind of snow depth and didn't go any further. It was my second longest drive for a DNF. I then drove 6 more miles North to Orr and attempted a cache there on a wooden boardwalk -- covered in snow. The boardwalk turned and I didn't (as I couldn't see it under the snow) and ended up waist deep again. When I got to GZ I couldn't locate it. After logging the DNF the cache owner laughed and said it was under the boardwalk and there was no way I would have found it. _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

I have used Snowshoes and have done the cache in Sept. It could be done now. It wouldn't be easy but it could be done. Finding a bucket in 3+ feet of snow wouldn't be that easy once getting to GZ. But it could be done! _________________ A Crazed Gyration of the Rock Generation |

The DNR is reporting about 15" of snow in Cook right now:
http://www.mnsnowmobileconditions.com/Minnesota-Snow-Depth
Now would be the time to get it - it's only going to get deeper... 15" isn't bad to find a pail, especially if you're equipped for it (shovel, boots, etc). _________________ Hmm... |

| Snowshoes and shovel. I guess it comes down to how the cache is hidden. Sounds like a bucket.. if near a geobeacon it might be ok. If it is hidden under 15" of snow somewhere in a clearing it could be impossible. Anyone who has found it want to report? |

It's a 5-gal pail under what used to be a deer stand IIRC. I also recall there being something to sit on there, although it's been a few years since I've been there. _________________ Hmm... |

It's a small open area. Maybe 20-30 ft There was a chair by it but not right at the bucket. A pokeing stick should be all you need. _________________ A Crazed Gyration of the Rock Generation |

Could someone please link the cache here? I am just curious as to what part of northern MN it is in. Thanks, _________________ King of the Jeff Gordon TB's!
