There is talk on the National Forums of where Geocoin Fest 2008 will be hosted.
Some are suggesting the Midwest since it is easier for everyone to get to.
Does the MnGCA want to get into proposing the Twin Cities as a host city?
I am just throwing it out there.

I propose we have it at pfalstad's house since FSU*Noles lives too far west of the metro. _________________ Tupperware doesn't belong in the kitchen! |

We do have considerable cache density in the metro that it could certainly be competetive. Are you volunteering to put together a comittee to put together a proposal merkman>? _________________ When Re-Inventing the Wheel ... Think Rounder |

The simple fact of the matter is that finding enough people in Minnesota to host an event that size would be quite the feat.
It's like pulling teeth to find 4 or 5 people interested in being on a committee to host an event for 60 to 100.
Oh that and the fact that everyone thinks that we're unfriendly because we don't pass out name tags
edit because what I said made nearly no sense yet merkman somehow deciphered it _________________ Sad state of affairs.

Sounds like we would need at least 500-600 name tags for this one.
I would be willing to do my part in something like this. I am not sure what my part would be yet. Who else would be interested? |

Maybe-depends on the date of the event. I already have one commitment for that year. _________________ Summer is too short |

It sounds like most people would like it in the Fall. Somewhere around Labor Day. |

From the national forums.

I'm not trying to cause trouble here! I just thought that the San Francisco Bay Area would be an ideal location for coinfest 2008 and that it logically should involve the local organization.
AtlantaGal
The idea is NOT to have an entire organization behind it. Then the event goes nowhere fast. We've been that route initially and it was entirely too top heavy and obviously unworkable. 2-3 individuals locally is all that's needed and requested.
|
I guess they are not looking for the help of organizations. But if there are individuals from our organization that would like to help, I would see nothing wrong with that.

Sounds to me like they don't even need MnGCA sponsorship. What they are looking for is a couple of individuals to help coordinate in the local area.
Merk,
sounds like you can volunteer, help identify a location for it to be held, help identify camping and other locations, and help identify other activities in the area like MOA.
Generally, it sounds to me like they need to be sold on a specific area. Just like the olympics need to be sold on a town to host. _________________ Airborne All the Way! |

Agreed. I don't think an organization needs to be involved, just enough individuals to make the plans.
Granted, 500 or more cachers in one area is going to be a harder thing to plan, and there is a good bit of logistics (i.e. most cachers are coming from out of town, what kind of accomodations can they get, prices, flights, transportation, food, etc.). But in the end, you do have to sell cachers on an area.
On the plus side, if you could organize an event that large in the state, that'd be the first Mega event to be held here, I suppose there'd be some prestige to that
I've got a lot on my plate right now, but if other people are interested, and need some help gathering information, let me know. |

Thanks KC0GRN!!
I don't want to sell it if there is no local interest. |

I pitched a little bit about the posibility of having it in Stillwater, MN.
http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=156040&st=150
We will see where it goes. There are allot of nice areas for them to choose from.
At least now I know that I MAY have a little backing from former hawkeye, sir_zman, KC0GRN, and/or anyone else that may be interested if needed. |

I just went over and read up on it.
I'll try and keep an eye on that forum thread as well, maybe I can field questions there if they pop up. Sounds good though, at least everybody's receptive to considering Minnesota for it, instead of poo pooing the idea from the getgo. |
