I've used 3 electronic compasses before - 2 of which were embedded with Garmin GPS receivers. I never got any value out of any. Waste of batteries as far as I'm concerned.
The only time I'd use it is if I was in a stationary location and I needed to plot a vector with precision. I don't trust the accuracy of it even after playing with the calibration a lot anyway.
It's never been helpful for me geocaching.
