someone can convince me otherwise.
The MAJORITY of my caches will become "members-only", and I really don't want to do it. Four-five have 'disappeared' recently. Two were in the same park, within 24 hours of being posted on the website. It was raining heavily when I placed them, and no-one else was in the park. No-one could have discovered them unintentionally.
There are three others with suspicious circumstances as well.
In the future, I want to know who has looked at my cache pages. I know one way to get that.
I know it's short notice, and some people are going to be pissed off. What would YOU do? _________________ Joined: 16 Dec 2002

Just remember that if you have an in Ramsey County Parks to keep them an open to all.
As for the idea I can imagine how difficult it would be to keep up with the caches.
One small note. Some people use wireless devices while geocaching. Some of the devices will not allow you to log on to the geocaching page as a specific user, thus you can not view member-only caches on some of those devices. I do not use one, but I know several people that do.
What about having a period of time the caches are member-only after new placements. Then after that time opening them up to all members.
As a member of geocaching.com I would not the person to complain either way. |

Thanks for your thoughts.
The Ramsey County Parks caches will not be restricted, complying with the new rules.

I was wondering if anyone else has lost recent caches also?
KB are they all in a general area of the city or all over? If it is isolated, just restrict the ones in the general area. |

This is a bit frustrating, but I do understand the motives.
Yesterday we went to Maple Grove, and was expecting to find three caches near each other. All three were in my GPSr already, but after we found the first one, I could not access the other two from my hiptop, as they became member-only caches. We didn't bother trying to find them, knowing we wouldn't be able to log them. If it wasn't for having internet access while caching, we would have gone to them, potentially found them, and been rather ticked off about not being able to log.
Frustrating, but I guess, if caches are going missing, what are you going to do?
*shrug*
What's riding behind my story is the fact that I am unsure if I want to financially support geocaching.com without having even a little voice as to what direction they're going to take things. That's what it boils down to for me.

I apologize for that, and knew that could happen. I'm going to Fargo, and someone picked up a TB from one of my caches, but didn't/couldn't log the cache online.
I've done this in the past and will do it again. If you find one of my caches, and can't log it, e-mail me. I will change the access until you are able to log it. Yes, it's a hassle. Sorry ...
Abe and Carly:
You may have answered your own question. I sent you a photo. It appears the thief is now going after the Ramsey County parks caches.
An open note to the A$$:
You're not hurting me, you're hurting all geocachers who search for my caches. Due to the changing rules/ordinances, etc. caches can't/won't be continuous for periods over a year. Now I could care less if a cache lasts a day, or two years. The challenge for me is finding a spot, and being able to get it approved. When a new cache is posted, my goal is achieved. Again, you're hurting everyone BUT me.
Is it all about the numbers, then? YES, it is. But I believe that MOST of them continue to be quality caches. I may be obsessive about it now, but not so much that I won't help out my nearest competitor. CCCooperAgency will soon have a Minnesota cache. It will be one of her 50 state "Happy" series caches, and I'm helping her. _________________ Joined: 16 Dec 2002

It appears that R.J.'s "Moving 123" cache has also gone MIA up in Elk River. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! You in the bushes."

It's the return of the TROLL!!!
I have run across several looted, plundered, wrecked, missing caches in the past month. As the sport becomes more popular and featured more in the news and on radio this will happen more.
I agree with KB's members only thing, but we all know that even member only caches can disappear -- remember "Nola" and Steppenwolf?
We also had a non-logging "TBug collector" come through not too long ago and take up a bunch of bugs that all ended up MIA. Grrrrrrrr......
Who knows what motivates some people to do what they do? Plundering caches and stealing Travel Bugs is a huge waste of time and energy. |

I've had five caches MIA recently.
Bass Lake in St Louis Park
Parallel Paths in Minneapolis
Swingin' Cache in Edina
Moving 123 in Elk River
Minneapolis Sculpture Garden downtown.
Sad but easily replaced. I have my doubts to whether they were stolen or simply stumbled upon. If someone is taking them I guess I'll keep putting them back.
I'm not a member so I guess I couldn't find any member-only caches.
You know what? It would be really hard to steal a benchmark! |

Virtual caches are also hard to steal, if you can ever get the darn things approved (I just submitted two, and only got one approved after 2 or 3 emails to erik88l-r). I had one of mine recently disappear, and I'm still debating whether I should replace it with another ammo box full of books, change it to a micro, or just archive it. My theory is that it's a return of our local troll or trolls, as well as more people getting out and about and just stumbling across them. _________________ There comes a time in every young boy's life when he gets an irresistible urge to seek buried treasure.--Mark Twain |

For what it's worth... I was kayaking on Orono Lake yesterday which is where Moving 123 was last hidden. I noticed that the point on which it had been hidden was over-run with kids. When I found the cache, it was laying, covered with birch bark, just a few feet off of the trail, and would have been very easy for somebody to accidentally find. The ony reason I left it there was because I thought Wallypog was coming out soon to grab it.
I don't think this disappearance is related to the others. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! You in the bushes."

| KB - do you think they are picking up any old cache in mugging it, or do you think it's targeted? Could it be just by chance that all these people are finding caches (and potentially looting them) now that the weather is nice? |
OK, it's possible that Island Lake was spied while being logged. I knew I should have moved it, but didn't have time. I came in from the back, and didn't realize the path ran by that close. Or, if it was targeted, it was a rather easy one to get.
The Oak Grove caches were definitely targeted. If Murphy-Hanrehan is gone, it was targeted. Very few of my caches, since #073 (July 2002), have been accidentally discovered. Maybe 5, less than ten.
I don't wish to criticize, but some caches I 'find' really surprise me that they're still there. _________________ Joined: 16 Dec 2002

guilt attack
My fault since I didn't give the lad a ride up there in time.
We did try to go after it on Saturday (along with about 6 other geocachers throughout the day)
Sorry -- RJ should let us replace the thing for him -- Paul has a spot all picked out. |
