Hi
My first post !!!!!!
My wife bought me a Garmin Etrex(yellow) for Christmas and I have not even opened it yet, because I am pretty sure I am going to return it and get a higher level GPS unit. I believe that the Legend C would be good enough for me, but am wondering if I should just bite the bullet and buy the Legend Cx right away.
I plan on doing geocaching and maybe a bit of travel help with this unit. I do not get out of state much, but when I do I would probably bring the unit with.
Thanks for any input.
See you on the trails. |

There is about a $60 price difference between the two. The C has 24MB of memory (permanently limited) and the Cx comes w/32MB but can be upgraded via SD card.
24MB (with autorouting stuff included) will get you all of MN and some of western WI. 32MB will get you some more (about the size of the Mpls/St. Paul metro) but with the option to increase the size as you see fit.
IMHO, the ~$60 is worth that. _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

| For my opinion I say go with any Garmin unit, myself I own a GPS72 and love it so far. I am not sure what the specs are on the two you listed. |

Personally, I'd also stay garmin, because as we've been out with the WeekNIGHT cacher's, it's seemed that those of us with Garmin's do better than the magellan group
I've got just the basic Legend, and I'm happy with it so far, but I alreay do know that I would rather have autorouting for finding the parking areas. Not sure on either of the two you've listed, but from what I've seen if only one has autorouting get that, and if they both do I'd get the upgradeable one, because no matter what you have, you're always going to want something more

Getting back to the actual question asked... I would DEFINITELY pay the extra $60 for the Cx. The maps you would but from Garmin to load into your unit are City Select (v7) which is in the process of being discontinued in favor of City Navigator. The map segments in CS are much smaller in coverage than in CN allowing allowing you to more precisely load the maps you need, for instance following the interstate for a long trip, thus making more efficient use of your memory. The current version of CN makes you load huge sections at a time. There have been some rumblings from Garmin that the next version of CN will have smaller segment sizes similar to CS. Until then, or if that doesn't happen, you will want as much memory as possible, and the interchangeable memory cards in the new X models will be very useful. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! If you plan on using 2 GPS's at a time....the yellow etrex has data interface....I used to have a yellow etrex and would just use it as a reciever and leave it on my dash when I had my laptop along with my map program running. (redneck autorouting??) And sometimes I would let my 2 boys use it when they were "helping" me find a geocache (they are a little young to know how to set it up but can follow the arrow just fine =))
Otherwise...you will definateley outgrow it (almost instantly) as a main geocaching unit (in my opinion)
Like said before....the more memory options, the better. And good mapping is a must. _________________ Everyone has a photographic memory..some, like me, just don't have any film. |

My new Garmin Etrex LegendCx arrived!!!! Now I need to load it up with waypoints and get caching. Starting with all of Jambros.
So far this thing rocks!. I get reception inside my house and car and the 32 Mb card will hold plenty of maps that I currently plan to have. |

Congratulations on the new GPSr. Sounds like a good one.
The topic was going in a Garmin vs. Magellan direction. I thought I'd spit it and move it here: http://www.mngca.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2167&highlight= _________________ ...formerly 'dachebo'. |
