Do our current GPSr's pick up new satellites automatically?

I would imagine so. It ought to read in a range that the GPSr you have is scanning...

The new channel will likely require hardware and software updates to today's handheld GPS units. Supposedly the new channel will help adjust for changes in atomospheric differences in real time offering better reception.

Hardware, or just software? I don't mind getting some firmware but, cheapskate that I am, the hardware will remain the same.

Now I have to go find KB's cache Smile

Well, I should have mentioned it before, but because IANAS, I am not 100% sure but it seems likely that you would need new hardware. Anything to get those geocachers to buy another unit Wink

I wouldn't worry too much about it now anyway. How often will you get that satellite in your grouping anyway? Considering they're not in geosync orbits you never get the same configuration (that might have implications in reception and accuracy too).

Yup, great point, they are slowly replacing them but because some are so old they might add a couple more up there before we know it -- especially that these new sats include two additional military channels.

Cool stuff. Wonder if I can request the coordinates (of a certain cache that's giving me fits) for one of those cruise missiles... Can I get a link to that page please?
