Jod's team of mud bogging monkeys have finally released support for instant notification of new caches in your area if you are a Premium Member. This is apparently the reason for the recent arrival of "Published" notes on cache pages after approval.

why is the are box for locationless caches? I thought they will not allow these.

We like this in a cache too- and when we are looking for a day of caching, avoid any caches that seem "too far" to do in a day or may take longer than we want to do on a caching day. I am working on adding this to my caches.

A "short" distance down the trail may mean different thing to cachers with different abilities. An "approximately 15 minute walk" or " about a mile" down the trail works best for us.

If I simply want an e-mail notification of new traditional caches in my area...

After I chose "traditonal caches" I have to choose at least one of the boxes.... Do I choose "Archive (show)" to just get the notification that a new cache has been placed??

I looked but could not find more info explaining what each option actually does.

Thanks SB!! I was thinking that I wanted "publish listings" but was wondering if it would email me EVERY time someone posts a log.
(just as if I had every cache in my area on a "watch list") I changed them all to "publish listings"......time will tell

If you notice on newly approved caches that they always start with a log of type "published" by mtn-man (or whatever approver approved the cache). I believe that log will generate the notification that you are looking for. So it won't notify you for normal "found" logs, just for "published" logs.

I've had it setup since it was first posted here (a week maybe). So far I'm not too thrilled.

It worked fine the for the one cache that has met the criteria that I setup (we're slow at getting new caches placed up here). The problem is that I set it up to send the notification to my cell phone. The email that gc.com generated was formatted so that most of the information was cut off by my cellular provider as being too long for the phone. It would be nice to get something like the Texas Geocachers used to have that was short and to the point:

"New Cache"
N xx xx.xxx
W xx xx.xxx

Time will tell if I leave it enabled to the cell phone or not. All I really got out of the one alert was that there was a new cache placed in the area and I need to go online to find out the details.

All new caches approved have a note by mtn-man that say it's been "published". This instant notify is likely the reason.
