Has it really been almost ten years?
Like a steam locomotive
rolling down the track
He's gone
He's gone
and nothing's gonna bring him back
(In memory of Jerry Garcia, August 1, 1942 - August 9th, 1995)

Well, not quite but close... I remember exactly what I was doing when I found out. I had just returned home from practice, sat down at the computer, hopped on IRC, and was told by numerous people who knew that I'd be interested that he was gone.
There have been only a few times when I cried like I did that morning... I immediately went upstairs, fired up the BX-300 with my favorite show (1-22-78 -- also my birthday show) and listened to it all full volume until it ran out.
I read through all the articles I had saved from numerous sources over the years... The last one I read has remained my favorite:
Psychedelics showed me a whole other universe, hundreds and millions of universes. So that was an incredibly positive experience. But on the other hand, I can't take psychedelics and perform as a professional. I might go out onstage and say, 'Hey, **** this, I want to go chase butterflies!'
I just hope he's out there jammin' away in one of those millions of universes enjoying himself in ways only he could appreciate.
May the four winds blow you safely home! _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

I was at work when I heard and ended up going home early and just listened to the music till I passed out. _________________ Well the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry any more

So, yes I jumped the gun a bit...Thanks for your posts.
It’s the evening before the 10th anniversary of the passing of Jerry Garcia, Singer/Songwriter/Musician extraordinaire. Not to mention he had a style all his own.
Having read books by Kesey, and Wolfe, in the ‘70s, I likened myself to a merry prankster. I was always ‘on the bus,’ though I saw him perform live only once, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
As for Aug. 9th, ‘95 - I don’t remember too much of that day. Of course I often wonder what happened to big pieces of the ‘90s. I didn’t find my way into recovery till ‘97, and thank God for that. Enough about me.
Fare You Well, Jerry!
Let there be songs, to fill the air. _________________ ...formerly 'dachebo'. |

I remember August 9th '95 for two reasons. First was Jerry, though I had never seen the Dead live (alas I thought I'd have time).
The second was that it was the first IPO (Initial Public Offering) that I ever watched closely (alas I didn't buy) - Netscape. Who knew at the time that net stocks would boom for five years after that day. And then bust in a big way.
August 9th '95 was an interesting day of sorrow and promise for me. |
