| I wish I would have had my camera the other night. I was out for a walk with my wife around Lake Nokomis. We decided to cross the bridge back over the lake because we were going to have dinner outside at Fat Lorenzo's nearby. As we're walking across the bridge (west side), I looked over and saw a dozen or so of these huge catfish gulping up stuff from the surface. I bet the biggest was 10 to 15 lbs. They were huge! I don't know what they were eating. I thought they are usually bottom feeders. |

Are you sure they weren't carp?
As the water temperature goes up, there is much less oxygen in the water. When that happens, it's not unusual for fish to come to the surface and gulp particularly in a spot where turbulence is mixing more air in with the water. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! Kim and I went up to Gull Lake Recreation Area a couple weekends ago and saw something similiar. An abundance of carp right next to the outlet of the dam (most of them were at least 18"). I thought they were feeding on the smaller fish that were seemingly trapped in an area of less turbulent water but they never really moved.
This makes more sense. Thanks. _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

| I'm certainly no expert on fish, so they could have been. These had long whiskers. Do carp also have whiskers? |

hehe - yep.
I just goggled carp and saw several photos of carp with a single whisker on each side of the mouth, so it's very possible they could be carp. I don't know for sure.
However, when I was recently in Oklahoma on my mom's farm, I saw catfish feeding on the surface. However, the reason was intentional. They have large pellets of fish food in 55lb bags that they feed to the catfish and perch in the pond to keep them fat for fishing. They would ring a bell, and like Pavlov's dogs, the fish would come to the surface before the food was even thrown out. Really cool to watch them feed. Those catfish would suck up the feed like a vacuum cleaner, while the perch did a hit and run approach. |

My guess is that they were carp. Besides, a 10-15lb catfish is not that big of catfish. I think that the blue record is something like 52lbs, the channel 38, and the flathead 70. Of course these are records, but still. I fish the Taylors Falls/St. Croix Falls Annual Catfish Tournament put on each year by the fire departments. Usually, we see many channel cats in the 20-30lb range. My largest caught that won me 4th place with my dad in 1999 was 17.9lbs.
Here's my best friend Tony holding a cat we caught during the tournament. I think this one weighed in around 19lbs. This photo was taken summer of 2000 :
That was the days of the 14' Alumacraft. We've since upgraded to better boats, but haven't caught a cat this big in 5 years... |

| From the looks of that pic I wouldn't be surprised was it noodled, and knowing what that entails with one of them in the water it ought to cure anyone of that kind of nonsense. |
