| can't believe I'm a minnesotan and haven't tried a morel mushroom. And I like mushrooms, hmm... I'd go pick one, but most likely I'd pick a deadly variety. lol! |

I can recommend a good book and would be happy to put a morel in your hand so you know what to eat without killing yourself. If you're quick there should still be a few available. |

I didn't find many. I brought out a fist sized one and dropped it off for jambro.
My advice would be to go ASAP and when you have a bearing of 360 to the cache from the trail, just ease on in and keep your eyes open. You wouldn't need but one the size of what I left for jambro to go into something like shrimp alfredo, and a couple would be a meal by themselves. The best of the area I saw was south of the cache, but I didn't go north of the opening at all.
This is really a month past the best time for them. With the deer and squirrels eating them too you have competition. Well, with some loudmouth publishing to the world where to find them I should say you might have more competition. Let's just hope that the newbie mushroomers are so scared of getting dead or stoned they won't go look. |

I was out turkey hunting two weeks ago, and found 15 pounds of morels to go with my 21 pound turkey.
Now if only I'd have stumbled onto a cranberry bog......

The season is over, for the most part. I think the only reason I found a couple of edible ones is because they were so large and they didn't dry out as quickly. We did find a bunch of smaller ones too, but those were pretty much shriveled up. |

Once you've seen a morel, it's pretty hard to mistake them for anything else. There is such a thing as a false morel, but their stems are solid, whereas true morels have a hollow stem. |

Amen!
I figured I'd share because this *is* late in the season and I did tell people to bring both a CITO bag and a bag for mushrooms in the description for Old Rookery which is about 1000 feet away across Rice Creek from KB's cache.
There is a lot of good ground for morels there because the Herons used it for a rookery for so many years and now there are so many dead trees from all the fertilizer. |

At least in Montana, the lore is that there aren't any poisonous mushrooms that grow there--most are absolutely inedible (woody, taste like the south end of a north-bound skunk, etc).

Most of them here are edible too, and that's indeed what thye're like. False morels won't usually kill you.
The problem is that those damn amanitas come in so many varieties and can look different at different growth stages. There is no antidote to mycotoxin, and some of those things have a lot of a pretty potent mycotoxin.
If you can master chanterelles, tree oysters and morels, caching in the woods is a whole lot more rewarding. |
