Okay, we've all been there. Brushing away the bugs and the leaves, we stumble back onto the path, only to find ourselves being eyed by some innocent hikers, who, for all we know, think we have just come out of a drunken blackout from the night before! With GPS in hand, what quick-witted one-liners does everyone use to try to explain this akward moment? Me, I can never seem to get the whole idea across very clearly at first, and most of the time people don't seem all that convinced. Any great lines out there I can use in the future?

I find that a loud belch works wonders. Wink

Seriously, the only time amyone has asked me what I was up to, I was sitting, writing in the log book. I simply answered that I was doing some writing. That seemed to satisfy them.

Put you gps to your ear and say:

"Can you hear me now? . . . GOOOOOOOD!"

Have a trash bag in your hands and use it.

Need I say more?

When stumbling out on the path with a GPS in hand. Just say"and I thought I would never get lost with this thing"

Or ask them to help in the treasure hunt. I got a neighbor involved that way.

when i'm searching an area for a cache, and i'm visible from a trail, i pretend to be studying the trees or other natural environment when somebody is coming along. i did this several times while searching flower boxes in key west for a cache i was never able to find. nobody has freaked out thus far when i've emerged from a trail. fortunately i've never had to do that in the dark.
