One of the park rangers on the north shore this weekend spilled the beans to me about the 4th geocaching challenge. Looks like it's going to be a Wild Flower theme. Makes perfect sense to me.

OMG! When does it start? Will it involve the Rec areas like the last challenge? Will there be a final cache? Will there be regional caches like the first challenge? How long will it run? Will Garden Island be required or optional? I NEED TO MAKE PLANS!!!

LOL. I think the only other tidbit of information I was given is that it will start on Earth Day, which is much better than starting it on the lame Get Outdoors Day half way into June.

Only four parks and two finals left and didn't make it to any of them this summer. I heard from two different park rangers that the Avian Challenge was ending in October 2014. Is the January 2015 date still a sure thing?

And...my son and family joined us for a lot of the caches but weren't interested in collecting the bird cards. In the words of my daughter-in-law, "I don't need anymore junk around the house." Well, now the grandkids want the cards for their collections! Anyone have any extra (3) from Afton, Fort Snelling, Father Hennepin, and rats...a couple more that slip my mind? (I will have to edit my post when I find my list if anyone responds in the affirmative. I have a few extras from some parks where the kids grabbed some before mom laid down the law (and then changed her mind....) that I could trade.

And once around for the passport and hiking clubs, 2nd time around for the history challenge, 3rd time around for the critter challenge, and LAST time around the entire state for the avian challenge. As much as I love MN state parks and wild flowers, it ain't going to happen a fifth time.

It's official, the Avian Adventure caches are archived.

PJayCee and I got to be the very last finders for the cache in Frontenac.

Any news on when the state parks will announce the new challenge? They have events in their calendar discussing the new challenge but there are no official details yet on the geocache page.

I've been told Earth Day or the weekend following Earth Day. Not sure if that's true or a rumor. Though the DNR guaranteed me it was before Memorial Weekend this year.

Earth day is Wednesday, April 22, 2015, less than a month away.

I've been enjoying a lot, although that's mostly because I've visited about 20 new parks this year searching for the caches. Some of the caches have been extremely well done and others have more so-so. I'm assuming most of that is due to the motivation of whoever was in charge of the park's cache. It also helps to have an amazing location for the final, like the Monson Lake State Park cache.

I have only had the opportunity to visit about 10 and I thought most were pretty lame. Flandrau SP took me to visit a pit toilet at one of the stages! Ack. I understand the goal is to protect the natural areas along the trails but from a geocaching standpoint the use of mostly signposts makes for a lame cache. We love camping at and visiting our State Parks so I will continue to seek them when I can.

I've been enjoying the series. For me, it's not so much about the cache or the cards, but seeing and learning about the entire State. I decided this series is the one that I would seize to visit every State Park, and I have done just about that.

It's been a ton of fun driving the State and seeing the variety of terrains and lifestyles we as Minnesotans enjoy. Only frustration has been struggling with an individual stage here and there, and the one dog bite which cut a day short with a trip to the ER. Aside from those things, I've gained some great memories and the enjoyed the therapeutic benefits of having time to myself and miles of open roads ahead.

I have only eight wildflowers left to do. It's taking me much longer than the first three programs as now I am also doing the Hiking Club at every park. I only have six of those left to do.
