This is not really a recommended cache, more a recommended area. The Cannon River Wilderness Area between Northfield and Faribault just east of highway 3 is a beautiful wilderness park on both sides of the Cannon river. There are about 40 traditional, a few finals for puzzles, and 3 multi caches which have all won Cache of the Month honors. Probably no other park in MN with 3 active COTMs (Gauntlets).
The 3 multi's all take at least 3 hours to complete, and can be done without extra tools, just a little common sense.
Some of the traditionals involve a 6+ mile hike. Parts of the park have some extreme terrain, sandstone cliffs, ravines, etc.
This is also a popular spot for birding, and there are some birds in the area seen no where else in MN.

I was thinking of heading down this sunday, before the river gets too high - on my list of places to explore more of! I have a few 'depends on...' - but hopefully the stars will align!

I don't think you will have a problem with the river this year, unless it really starts to rain.

It was muddy in spots when we were down there in November. I imagine it is worse now.

Oh, and if you are going to do any of the Gauntlets, I recommend bringing a friend or two.

I would agree on river level. It's at a level where it can be safely paddled at Class II or less. But like someone else said, mud will be an issue until we get some sunshine.

There is only one cache there that I know of that will need a canoe or kayak, and that is a puzzle cache. With the snow coming it will be very slippery on the hills. Sometime your GPS will say 50 feet from GZ, but the elevation is another 100 or so

You do not need a canoe or kayak to get to the puzzle cache. I walked to it. It is a nasty bushwhack from the nearest trail and then waste deep water, but you can do it without a floatation device.

Just a note that I archived Gauntlet 2012: Sticks and Stones. The final stage was stolen, and the cache makes no sense without it, and making another final is not going to happen. I'm really sorry to see this one go, I had thought it would last longer in this more remote area of the park. It does open the area for other cachers to put something out, though.

Again, really sorry this happened. I think my two buddies (who don't log but cache with me almost every week) are a little traumatized. Maybe I should take them to one of the other Gauntlets, though it looks like they've been quiet / unfound for some time. ....

Oh no, I'm sorry to hear that! We had that one to do, and the Senses one to finish. I have to agree, this has been one of our "hidden gem" places to explore.

I am REALLY hoping this means you can put out a NEW gauntlet, that you have been slaving away over for the last year!
