Here is a Greasemonkey script that will restore Google maps if you are using Firefox : http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/125938
It works great... give it a try! Groundspeak originally deleted the posts that linked to the script, but later restored them, so apparently this OK to use.
The speed issues seem to have improved, at least for me. But it remains to see what they will look like on Friday night. _________________ Alcohol & calculus don't mix. Don't drink & deriv |

From what I understand, the script bypasses the Google API, and it is possible that if you use it heavily, you would find access to Google Maps blocked from that IP for the next 24 hours. In that case, just disable the script for the day and live with the ugly maps. _________________ Alcohol & calculus don't mix. Don't drink & deriv |

I loved this post that was made on the national forum regarding the maps:

OK, I'm only seeing one solution to the maps problem.
Groundspeak - You need your own mapping satellite. Period.
I am a paying customer and I would be willing to accept an increase of five dollars to my Premium Membership -annually- if that's what it takes to make this happen.
I am also willing to help Groundspeak offset the cost of building and launching this satellite by volunteering my time to the Research & Development team. Just this afternoon I began working on a propulsion system with a form of propellant made from Diet Coke and Mentos mixed inside the bottle. I can also snap some pretty sweet aerials with my digital camera duct taped to my cousin's kite. I mean, I know it hasn't been perfected yet and I'm still beta testing, but I don't see anybody else coming up with anything. And seriously, it only has to work once.

In the upper-right corner of the new map page there is an icon that, when clicked, lets you change to different map sources. One of the options is "MapQuest Aerial". At this time, however, this option seems to load extremely slowly. _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! You in the bushes."

Yes the imagery loads VERY slow, and doesn't zoom in as close as Google does. |

Thank you very much for my Google maps. I have what is referred to as broadband lite. You think your Mapquest maps load slowly... Much of the time I only get 2/3 to 3/4 of my map loaded with the rest being large gray boxes. Of course, the gray box is always where I want to see the map. I never had that problem with the Google maps. _________________ Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

| Just when life is moving along trouble free, everything goes and changes. I hope they get the maps to load faster. I could get used to them if that was the case. I still end up using Google Earth now to look up terrain since I also find that the gray boxes always end up on the area I want to see. |

I love the new maps. I love the new maps. I love the new maps.
If I keep telling myself that maybe I will not hate them some day! |

I like the improved handling of pocket queries on the maps - No longer do I have to look at ALL caches and figure out which one have a lightning bolt by them.
I feel this is far improved over previous versions, even if the base maps are now different. I prefer the google, but I can deal with the provided options. |

Anyone else notice that mobile home parks are named, parks are not? _________________ "We never seek things for themselves-what we seek is the very seeking of things"-Pascal |

Does anyone else miss the topo maps? Those who cache in the Arrowhead area and beyond know how important this can be. As an example should I cut across Bardon Peak or hike out and up another trail. Having the entire area on the map on the computer planning your trip ahead of time is much better than doing it on the fly zooming in and out with your GPSr. Swamps are another item up here. One can pick out a swamp on an aerial photo (more or less for those of us who are still perfecting the craft), but it is nice to have it corroborated with a Topo map. In addition, more than once what I thought was a trail that I was going to take has turned out to be a river as indicated on a Topo map. Is there a way to get mytopo maps just like we can get the Google maps? _________________ Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-

Click the icon in the upper right-hand corner of the map and select "My Topo". _________________ "Hi, I'm Moe, or as the women know me - Hey! You in the bushes."
