It started with a B maybe it was Berklin or some thing like that. Does that sound familar?

It seems that the problem is frequent! At the moment, i have the same problem with my Garmin Summit HC!
"Well, I have tired three sets of brand new batteries with no luck. I have tried also USB energie cable. When I try to turn the unit on, there seems to a flash of life on the screen for 3 seconds, but that is it. "
Factory defect?!

Is it still under warranty? either way contact Garmin and they can walk you through a master reset or arrange for you to ship it to them. If you have to ship it to them they have a fast turn around.

Most times it is corrupt software in the unit.
Did you try a hard reset.
I believe the steps for hard reset are:
hold down enter, page, and power at the same time for 5 seconds.

I was doing some googling on this as someone asked me for a recommendation on it. Turns out that's a widespread issue with the eTrex HC line. I didn't find any fix for it other than send it back to Garmin or get another GPSr.
Scratching this one off my recommendation list.

No that has never happened as a matter fact at many of the weeknights I was able to make it to before I moved I found before many of the Garmins that were with us. |

I had the identical problem with my Venture HC... I thought I had somehow "bricked" it... I would turn it on... The screen would flash momentarily (satellite screen) then >blip< turn itself off... Fresh batteries, and a direct power supply did NOTHING...
I started searching around the web, and found a possible fix. It successfully repaired it, and have been caching on that unit for several months since...

- Pull the batteries and other external power sources, then put them back in.
- Go to the Garmin site to download the manual software updates: http://www8.garmin.com/support/blosp.jsp and download the appropriate file (not the web updater)
- Extract the update to a folder. By default it will go to C:\Garmin, but you should put it somewhere else if you've already installed Garmin software.

It seemed like corrupt software on my GPS...
If I remember correctly, the KEY to getting this done was not using the web updater - but using the downloaded MANUAL updater...
I had the software (on the PC) running and one button click away from sending the update.
I hooked up my GPS, and started it up. I got the hello screen, and JUST as it flashed to the satellite screen, I hit the send update button - which seemed to "override" the GPS's software.
It was a trick getting the timing done just right (and I think I may have had to try it a two or three times before it took)..
I cannot guarantee results... only that our "problems" seemed very similar - and the above "solution" worked for me...
I hope this helps someone save themselves 75 bucks!
