I'm in need of a short intro to caching presentation that is appropriate for 1st graders. I received a phone call today from a local cacher that wants to put on something for his son's Cub Scout den in the spring.

I think it would probably need to be about 5 minutes, tops, include some of the very basics of what the coordinate means and what a geocache is.

I did something on those lines for the scouts.
I put out a few caches around the church that we met at and had the cords on the GPS already.

The thing in the caches would not have passed in the real world As it was candy and mostly I had some toys in the one.

They found them and then took them with them to the next cache again not like the real world but The boys got the Idea.

After that many of the boys wanted to tag along on many of my outings.
It was kind of fun to teach the fathers also. Many of them dads were always looking for more fun things to do with there boys.

And haveing dads along on those outings made for more eyes looking.
And many of the dads learned how to use the GPS that they had gotten long before.

I agree with casinoman. I did something similar for my son's 2nd grade birthday party -- hid temp caches with candy and junky toys in our neighborhood, preloaded the coords and let each kid have a turn holding the GPS and following the arrow as they ran from cache to cache. They LOVED it.

Maybe afterward explain the differences between "real" caching and what they did. Show some actual containers of different sizes and talk for about 2 minutes about how there are thousands of these all over the world and right in our town -- in cities, in parks, magnetic, underwater but most are in the woods and a great thing to do while hiking. There is no candy and when you take something you leave something vs just looting. Print out a map of the area so they can see where there are near their house.

Thanks for the tips all. I just may do a short show & tell for a daisy scout group this next spring.
