Exactly! The folks in my park have been there for 17 and 18 years in did not even know the site of an endangered plant ( that of course is where I wanted my cache to go) |
When I did the History Challenge cache at Moose Lake I worked with the lady that did this job (I forget what the position is actually called). In the process she told me quite a bit about it (as we hiked around the park). A lot of the how's and why's (they don't tell people about the stuff as then people go and check it out and actually make things worse). Very informative. We also (of course) had to check out an animal kill, some plants, etc, along the way.

Heads up for those wanting to place a cache in a state park. There is a new permit application form, dated September 15, 2009.
Apparently the hider of an approved cache must renew annually.
Caches may not be placed in buildings or structures.
Completed applications can be submitted by mail.
The DNR no longer says they will notify applicant by e-mail and hard copy; now it will be by e-mail OR hard copy. |

Maybe I missed it, but I don't see anything in their own guidelines for placing a geocache that talk about renewing a permit.
Further, when I read the permit I saw the section that talked of renewing the permit was worded in such a way that the onus for taking any kind of action was on the DNR. They say they will notify cache hiders annualy if there are any problems or if the cache needs to be renewed. Maybe I read it wrong though.
Taken together, I don't think owners of existing State Park caches are required to do anything about renewing unless asked specifically to do so. If there's an issue and a cache hider is contacted, it makes complete sense to comply with their request to maintain, archive, or renew.

The guidelines didn't change, but the application for permit did.
You are right in saying that the DNR will contact the hider annually. |

| I'd imagine already-approved caches are grandfathered in. Then, too, park staff has more leeway in hiding caches in the state parks than "private" geocachers do. |

Gooseberry and William are very similar, but the container at William was.... let's just say it was designed and colored appropriately.
