Is the MnGCA working with the City of Brooklyn Park? If not, you might want to make contact ASAP.

Strib article

Jon Oyanagi sounds familiar. Anoka County, 5-6 years ago?

I understand the concept of having local policy. But requiring caches to be registered, unless they're in sensitive areas, is a bunch of beaurocratic hogwash. Wheww.. Thanks for letting me blow steam. I feel better now.

This sounds about right.

Oh the irony of seeing EP listed as "allowing" geocaching when it has one of the more restrictive policies -- whereas someplace like Minnetonka that has a "we don't need to get involved" attitude is I guess backward and not encouraging?

Well, all said and done it's worked out fine and I am glad we can cache here. The Brooklyn Park guy's reasoning sounds very similar to the EP one, wanting to know what's going on in the parks. And in EP's case to protect sensitive areas.

"nor may vegetation, rocks, or other natural or cultural features be moved, marked or damaged in the process of placing, accessing, or maintaining the cache."

Huh?!? Why don't they just come out and ban geocaching altogether?

Yeah, I saw that also. Don't move any leaves to cover up that cache!

I guess finding them will be easier as well! To find it you can't move anything either. They are going to be muggled pretty fast. Just watch the kids hauling out ammo cans.

The State Parks have the same statement in their policy but in the instructions to the park managers they suggested covering the caches with leaves, rocks and branches.

So IMOP take that with a grain of salt.

The City of Brooklyn Park has now established its geocaching policy. The policy and registration form can be found here.

We have the policy on the website as well. I see in looking back that we never posted about it in the forums, although it was posted on the front page.

I don't see anything about approval. And there's no email.

So registering is NOT required to have a cache published. Is this correct?

I'm not clear from this if you saw the page 2.

Quote:
Rules in Brief
1. All caches placed in Brooklyn Park Parks must be registered.
2. There is a limit of 10 caches per park.
3. Unregistered caches will be removed.
4. City of Brooklyn Park Geocaching policy applies to all caches in the parks.
5. All park ordinances apply.

That (#3) kind of implies that registration is required.

I did speak (via email) a little with Mary Pat Black when I put the policy on the MnGCA site. You're right on the email - they want a hard copy of the form returned. I am not aware of any response though from them to you, although I didn't ask her either.
