We were in the Sand Dunes searching for a Doctom cache and instead found a warning notice from the US Fish and Wildlife Service. It said "see Geocaching.com for NWR violation." It was written on 3-2-04 at 2:30 in the afternoon along the banks of the St. Francis river. What jurisdiction would the USFWS have over this area? Is the St. Francis river a "scenic and wild river"? Have we had any relations with these guys?

The sign is correct. It took a little research to find this. You were obviously searching for GC1BB...

The cache area falls under the Sherburne NWR, managed by the Fish & Wildlife Service. A good map of the refuge is here. The hard part was finding where on the NWR map the cache was, since the Mapquest map from Geocaching wasn't much help. Turns out the cache is located on the river, south of Cty Rd 4, between Cty Rd 1 and Cty Rd 15.

I will also post a note on the cache page referring to this thread.

When I placed these caches, I went to Sand Dunes. As soon as I saw the USFAW, I mildly (Ha!) cursed, and left. They confiscated my caches at Louisville Swamp.

That's a shame. Topozone still shows this area as Sand Dunes State Forest. Based on your note Pear Head, I have archived the cache. Well, that and the cache is gone. Sad

As I said, it is a shame to see an old cache like that go.
That cache is so old that it was approved by Jeremy.

That one had been there for a long time. I checked in on it quite a few times. Some of the history that went along with it included the times it got picked up by game hunters, taken home and then returned. The owner even temporarily archived it with the note that he would return in the spring to re-set it up. In the meantime a cacher went out to just look at the spot and re-found it as it had been returned by a non-member. Also sometimes I took ammunition out of the container. CK left the note here this weekend as he was up for a visit. It's just a friendly reminder that they took the cache and no further action would be needed. No one signed it, however it is from a numbered pad of tickets. JK
