Has anyone "built" their own topo trail maps?
I was wondering about using a USGS topo map and overlaying trail tracks from the Garmin 60CSx and then adding trail designations and POIs to the final product.
I was looking for suggestions for access to the map database, trail/POI symbols and ways to add text.
Thanks |

I have built trail maps before myself, but it was painful and time consuming. I don't have the steps handy, but I think if you google for the steps you'll find them. I had to render the files in a few different programs before I could import them into MapSource. You will want to create files that can be loaded into MapSource. My understanding is this isn't a requirement to get a map into your gps though. MapSource then becomes your "backup" in case you do something foolish like I did and update your gps from a different computer. You will lose any additional maps when you do that, something I wasn't aware of.
I hope that helps, at least it should get you going in the right direction.

Thanks Guys
I guess I wasn't specific enough in my request for information but will see if the link provided can fill the void between my ears.
I am ultimately hoping to put a 8-1/2 by 11 paper map together to help out with the local school kids in the school district forest/recreational area.
Happy Holidays to All.

Unfortunately, you would most likely need a GIS application....and those aren't cheap. That would allow you to render the data and edit it as you see fit. _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |
