I thought I'd start a new thread for this just to keep things clean.
To my surprise, two of the parks I've visited have names that are pronounced differently than you'd expect from their spelling.
- Lake Maria... It should be pronounced Mariah, like the singer.
- Kilen Woods... It should be pronounced Kileen, with a long "e".
- Lac Qui Parle... It should be pronounced Blood Transfusion, ok, j/k. |

I grew up near Kilen woods. I think it's more like kigh-lynn. I've never heard anyone pronounce it any differently. Where most say it wrong is kigh-lan with a short e. Another one we would hear a lot was sort of like kill-in. That one is the funniest. "Where's the 'killin' state park?"
It could be that all the locals are saying it wrong, but even the park ranger called it kigh-lynn when I was there.
I've been to that park many times, nice park in the middle of no where. Great tubing and cross country skiing in the winter and canoeing, hiking and camping in the summer.
I may not be writing the pronunciation correctly, but I think you'll get the drift.
Out of curiosity, where did you find the pronunciation? _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |

| A buddy of mine here at work is from Jackson. When I was talking about my recent trip to the area he corrected me. I pronounced it like "killin". I have no reason to doubt either one of you because regardless I was still wrong in both cases. |

How about this:
Lac Qui Parle - Lak' ki Par'-uhl
Also it means - "Lake which speaks" _________________ King of the Jeff Gordon TB's!

Don't feel bad, that's probably the most common mispronunciation. _________________ Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. |

I adopted this park, not know the correct pronunciation, because it's my wife's name. Imagine my surprise. Now I have to convince her that when I call her "Mariah" I'm really not talking about my girlfriend! _________________ I feel the need! The need for speed! |

Monson Lake: If you want to sound like a local, it's pronounced "MUN sin."
Not as entertaining as some of the others, I know. |

In my opinion that was about the worst spot they could have picked out to place that cache in, in the park. That area is notorious for flooding. I mentinoed this to them, but they insisted that was where the naturalist said to place it. There is a whole upper area to the park and I would have liked to see it up there myself. OH well! I am working on a cache to place up there. Just needs to get through the approval process. Who knows how long that will take? _________________ King of the Jeff Gordon TB's!

I've camped in that park a few different times. The last time we were hoping to be in the river valley but instead ended up on the prairie. I have to say it was one of the best stays we had during that trip. The park employee tried to 'talk up' the upper campground, which I reluctantly accepted (they didn't have other openings and our existing reservation was for the upper). I've also stayed in the lower campground and been happy there. All in all that park is one of my favorites.
My point being that everyone has very different opinions I guess (or maybe I just didn't have a point). _________________ Hmm... |
