I tried to boot frm a recovery disk but it would not read it. I am running XPhome edition. Bios looks ok. I tried switch the boot program from back up and that did not work. Please help!!! _________________ Good Food,Good wine, Great Friends |

No no don't do it. Not the Geek squad. While I have convidense in their abilities they are partnered with BB and there can not be trusted. On several occations I have entered that store and just for amusment purposes I have asked question to which I already know the answers. My concultion is that no one can be that stupid, therefore they have been trained to tell what ever lies it takes to get you to buy. They get extra points if the item is none returnable soft ware. I once got them to give a refund on none returnable (opened) software though. They did not like it. _________________ Save the earth.

Two possible problem areas.; the hard drive controller and or the hard drive has been corrupted.
Can you boot from the Recovery CD? _________________ Airborne All the Way! |

I've only heard good things from people who have had geek squad over to their house.
I must agree that the blue shirts at best buy are knobs. |

He said he couldn't boot from the recovery disk.
Ok, my usual list of question:
Does it have a warranty? Brand? If so have who ever you bought the computer from let them deal with it as that is what warranties are for
If not then:
The not booting from recovery disk, that's odd. You said bios was ok, you didn't muck around in there and take cdrom off the boot lixt or change the order of the boot list?
Will the recovery disk boot on someone elses computer? (just start it, don't actually recover)
If so something is up with your computer. If not where ever you got your recovery disk screwed up.
How far along in boot do you get? Do you get tot he login screen? Do you get far enough to press F8 as it is booting to get the option to goto safe mode? |

Well, I had to bring my PC into the shop to get fixed. It had at least 246 virus on it. I dont do any e-mail or surfing at home. My fifteen year old gets on it while i am at work.
It is going to cost me about 125.00 to get fixed. Anyone know a good antivirus software? some one suggested Norton 2004. Is it any good and how much will it cost? thanks _________________ Good Food,Good wine, Great Friends |

www.grisoft.com AVG is a free virus scanner. For some viruses you may need to turn off system restore if you run windows 2000 or XP (in My Computer properties somewhere) to get rid of all the viruses.
Also you may want to (just suggestions) get:
Adaware (takes out spyware)
Spybot (takes out spyware)
Google Toolbar (gets rid of popups in IE, or use mozilla instead. Tabbed browsing rules!)
CWShredder (for some hijack bots)
HijackThis (for other hijack bots, becareful, this is a tough program to use, expert only)
All of this is free.
Also use Eudora for an email client, it's free too. This will help eliminate the address book attack scripts that can be embedded in emails.
A good pay program to get rid of and monitor spyware is Pest Control. |
