As some of you may know I created a site to record the lat/long of grave sites, then display them via a google maps interface. I did this mainly for genealogical reasons, but recently I came across an article on wcco which made me think of another use for my site, I was wondering if anyone else has done this, or has heard of this past time. I'm sure this sounds as odd to us as geocaching does to muggles the first time they hear about it.

You should start in WI. They LOVE cemetery caching: http://tinyurl.com/3ldelo
Kim and I already have burial plots. I love telling Kim her name is already on it (it isn't). She tells me I'm sick _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

That's nothing... There's 552 Indiana Spirit Quest caches. |

| I'm not talking about gravesite caches as much as people who enjoy finding gravesites, (usually of famous people) and like to photograph them. |

| While I have never gone searching for famous peoples gravesites I do walk through older graveyards and read the markers. You can learn a lot sometimes. |

I had seen the first one, but not gravehunter My site differs slightly as findagrave is more about logging the grave info (and photo), where as my site http://www.RIPCoord.com does that but is more about mapping it, and saving the lat/long for transfer to a GPS device for sharing with others. |

| z, does your website allow other family members to be able to view a map from someone that has signed up and started marking gravesites? Thanks. |

When you start a "family" or group, you set it as private or public. if it is private then people need to request admittance to see/post family data. If the site is public, anyone can "join" the family and see/post the plots.
I was thinking for Grave Hunting, of making a generic "Famous People" "Family" and making it public, then anyone could see-add data. |

| It looks cool but I'm too lazy to fill in my name and email, why does it require this? Isn't there public data I can look at? (Oh now that I read your previous post, maybe not..) |

Not a lot of users on board right now, it's still pretty fresh, I only recently opened it up to public use. I don't think we have any families that have made admittance to the family public. The site isn't intended to be a wiki style site where anyone can add and edit information, I want to have controls in place to restrict the access to registered members.
I'll see about starting a "Famous People" section that is more open, as well as the ability to allow non-members to "view" your map...this does seem like a feature that would be desirable. thanks for the input. |
