This is good news - the fact that the lands remain open to forestry and recreational use bodes well for geocaching, it will be interesting to see how they sort that out.
It looks particularly good for deep peatland caches, certainly far too few of these out there.  |

| Yeppers, the paper companies are slowly pulling out of northern Minnesota and with no one interested in developing the land (since there is nothing there) it is best to sell the forests to the State and let them manage it, with the provision that the companies can still cut the trees of course. Seems like a win win for the paper companies. The big business up north get more and more liquid and the politicians get to claim it saves jobs. |

Some of the land going into these easements is pretty good quality - there is a piece around Sugar Hills that is a great sugar maple & pine system. Under the easement they should be managing these for sawtimber rather than K-Mart brochures, which is a much better use of the land IMHO. But yes, it is a sweet deal for timber companies.
I love those lands where 'nothing's there'! - would like to see them stay that way, since we're really good at being everywhere... |
