My friend asked me if she could put a GPS on her dog to track him when he takes off in the woods- she has heard that there are units out there for dogs, but is wondering if it would be cheaper to just buy a small cheap gps- any body had any experience with this?

Strapping a GPSr, like we use for caching, to your dog would be good for letting you know where he *was* once you found him. To track him, you need something that transmits his location and something to recieve it with.

Not only that but even if you did use an inexpensive GPS unit to track where he's *been* you would have to realize that he'd need to have the GPS in a clear view of the sky as well as be in a less wooded area. Inexpensive GPS units aren't exactly known for great operation in heavy tree cover.

r u looking just to know where the dog went running off 2....

or how to "retrack" the dog down and find it...such as a "lost" dog.

I have used my gps'r (Garmin etrex legend) to track a dog's running rampage (after the fact) at my cabin. (some supervised, some not)

Those runs were up a dirt road, with lots of running off into the trees/brush along the road and running around lots of the cabins & docks along the way. Lots of tree cover and buildings around - but I've seemed to have pretty good luck on the 10 or so I've done.
On one attemp at doing this at another cabin, I found adjusting the tracklog setup to use timed intervals, or reducing the frequency on automode helps- but reduces the accuracy of the track.(straight lines when sharp angles turns are made,etc)
I went back to full on auto, "more often" and had pretty good results, even in heavier cover.
I was also able to get Max speed of these dogs.........which can be affected by cover- but still......*Wow* Its amazing what a scent can do to a dog.... Smile
