It seems to me folks are putting the cart before the horse. No one has yet stepped forward to lead such an event and you're already discussing location.

I know lot of us cache paperlessly but I doubt any two of us do it the same way. There is no right or wrong approach. I have a method that works for me but most people would probably think it's stupid. Some people think GSAK is the ultimate tool, others think it's terrible.

My recommendation... just fool around with the various tools until you find a method that works for you.

This is how I started. Early Starts posted a little information that got me started. I know that some folks use Cachemate - I tried it and didn't like it so I don't use it.

Now I like to ask folks that I cache with (that do paperless) how they do it. Moe was one of the more recent ones I talked to some. I'm fairly happy with the way I do it, but I know others don't care for some of the software I use, nor do they like the steps I take.

One of the problems you may experience is simply getting your stuff all installed on your computer and communicating correctly. Unless everyone brings their home PC or laptop, it will be hard to overcome that step.

I'm more than willing to help folks do it the way I do it, or try and coach them best I can in other ways, via the forums.

If you can find someone to lead such an event then that's great too, but unless you want to do it in Duluth on one of my couple of free weekends over the summer, it's unlikely that I'd be able to lead it, and you haven't really had anyone else step forward (yet).

I had posted this idea a while ago, and knew a few people might be interested in attending, but I never managed to find a good location. I agree with Moe though, and my thoughts on such an evnt were not so much a teacher teaching a class, but more of an open discussion, let people that use different approaches or software show others how it works (ie, someone that uses gsak showing anyone else interested in learning it how to use it, someone else that knows Watcher shows it to anyone interested, etc).

I just couldn't locate a good meeting facility that would have a few computers or enough people with laptops. Plus the fact that most techies tend to be the alpha geek in their groups and want to indoctrinate the masses rather than be more give and take.

That being said, it'd still be a nice event to have, but given the large groups attending events now, my ideal of having small gatherings to learn different programs might be impractical anymore.

Here is a link to a good instructional site from a cacher I know. Both GSAK and free software are explained. He is usually willing to answer questions to get you started.

Click the link "Go Paperless" for the tutorial.

All I would be looking for is for someone to help explain some of the advanced features of GSAK. How they use it, how to do cool things with it...like use the filters efficiently. I'm sure I'd get some ideas by watching someone else use it and could then better discover how to use it myself and how it could or cant work for me.

This is more about meeting room space and less about an event. Just throwing the info out there.

All Hennepin County libraries have free WiFi access, and most have meeting rooms available at no charge to non-profit organizations. I can speak only for HCL, but I assume other library systems across the metro and the state also have meeting room space.

Washington County does the same thing. My wife used to be a librarian at the one in Woodbury and they also have free wifi.

Use Google Maps and figure out the driving time for your own address: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=43.29967+-89.73262 -- it's 231 mi (about 4 hours 5 mins) from 55101
