I ordered my new GPS off the internet, but can't wait the 5 or 6 days til it arrives, so I tried a Letterbox. It is allegedly located in Hawk Ridge in Duluth. After zigzagging back and forth for 45 minutes, really trying hard I come across a very obvious pile of stones in the area I thought it could be.
I was sooooo thrilled - VICTORY! Very proud of myself.
My first thought was "hmmm not quite where I would have guess from the directions."
As a moved all the little rocks away and there was alot, I encountered quite a bit of dirt on top of it, again thinking "hmmmm, this looks like topsoil, not the usually hillside stick filled dirt"
I found the lid to a wooden-type box. Now, I should have followed my womens intuition and STOPPED. But, no, heaven forbid. So as I am trying to pull this box out of the dirt, the lid pops off and I am face to face with someones poor dead PARAKEET!!!!
ARRRR!! So I do the very best that I can to get the lide back on, which involved stomping on it ever so lightly with the hiking boot, not to crush the box and I rebury it, but they had some large stones in a pattern around it and in my raccoon like scurry frantic digging, I could not recall how it was. So I put them back as best as I could and left a little note apologizing for disturbing him/her.
I feel really, really, really, bad!
And then on top of that as I was heading back to my car two large deer came crashing down the trail and scared the you know what out of me and my dog. At first I thought for sure it was a bear, and I have a 9 lbs dog with me who is peeing herself with fright!
My very first outing! Do they all go like that????? Maybe I should consider returning the GPS for a Tivo or something! |

| Can't say I've ever found a dead parakeet, but you will have interesting adventures from time to time! I agree with Kitch, it will become an addiction, just give it time - good luck! |

As long as his head wasn't duct taped on and given to a blind kid I'm sure it's ok! _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

I am splitting my gut from laughing so hard! Welcome to geocaching- and all the adventures it holds for you. hope to see you at the Lester Event. I honestly thought it would end that you found a cache instead of the letterbox- but when you got to the dirt, I couldn't think of a cache up there that was buried. Thank God it wasn't human ashes. Oh, my- this will keeping me laughing all day! _________________ LIFE IS GOOD;CABIN LIFE IS GREAT |

I don't think I am anywhere worthy of running with the big dogs yet! Looks like tons of fun!
Geez, I haven't found my first cache yet, just a bird crypt! lol |

You don't have to be a "big dog" to attend an event. It's basically just a time to hang out, do a couple caches, and swap war stories _________________ Sad state of affairs. |

And it sounds to me that you have one of the best war stories I've heard. _________________ May the potassium be with you! |
