Thought I'd ressurect an old idea after recently discussing ith with brjzn and zoejam72.

I know I posted once about having an event to help people with the various software programs out there relating to geocaching, and I think the only hang up was getting a computer lab somewhere with enough networked computers that we could install a few apps on. I know Joelcam mentioned checking out the TIES classrooms, but does anyone else know of a location that might work?

I thought this time of year would be a good time to get an event like this in, before spring hits. Would be nice to find a time that works for as many people as possible, not only for people wanting to learn, but for those that are willing to teach.

I would be interested. That is if it's on a weekend and I have the day off. I am not very knowledgeable to some of the things alot of cachers use. Maybe it would be a good idea to get a list of things people would be interested in learning how to do? Then you could go from there.

Just my $0.02 worth.

Good idea too, no reason to teach software that no one would benefit from learning.

Here's a List of some of the software that I'm aware of that I know some cachers use.

GPX and LOC file management:

EasyGPS
ExpertGPS
GPX Spinner
Geocaching Swiss Army Knife (GSAK)
gpsbabel
Clayjar Watcher

PDAs:

Plucker
Cachemate
Cetus GPX
GPXSonar
GPXView

Misc Utilities and Mapping:

USAPhotomaps
Geocalc
Mappoint
GPSVisualizer
MS Streets and Trips

If anyone knows of other programs not listed please chime in. I'm fairly experienced with EasyGPS, GSAK, Cachemate, USAPhotomaps, Geocalc, Mappoint, and GPSVisualizer.

If anyone has specific things they'd like to see covered please post away.

I would add gpsbabel to the loc/gpx management section.

and

MS Streets and Trips to the mapping section.

done.

Knew about gpsbabel, but also know that one's more console based and might not be as user friendly as GSAK, which uses it. But you're right, it's a good one to have on the list.

Hadn't thought of Streets and Trips, never had that program to mess with myself.
