How's this sound? Create a new type of cache, then have people all around the world set them up, and YOU get credit for it. VERY cool idea.

King Boreas is talking about:

http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=80787

Keep in mind that my comments in this thread are my own, and I do not
represent the opinion of the MnGCA board or Paklid.

As you'll see, I'm pretty upset that Groundspeak bans virtuals, then allows specific kinds of virtuals: if you do all the research, planning, approval with parks, etc., then hand it over to a thrid party which then owns the intellectual property of that virtual. Pretty unethical in my opinion.

To flesh out how this applies locally: Paklid placed the first "earth cache" in Minnesota:

http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_details.aspx?guid=e2ea16d7-65ec-48fb-87af-082b9614c1b5

I did it last night to find out what it was all about. I normally do not do virtuals, but this one was pretty good. I had a good time doing it. Unfortunately, Paklid did not realize that he wouldn't have ownership of the cache anymore after he did the work to create it. Mad

The original title was misleading and could have led to other threads being created about the same topic.

I didn't think you implied that, KB. I was just letting everyone else know that I was speaking out against what I personally believe is some poor actions on Groundspeak's part, and that I don't want people to assume that this is what the MnGCA thinks.

According to s4xton www.earthcache.org has already accomplished KBs idea. They have assumed credit for another kind of cache.

KB thinks its a "VERY cool idea" to "Create a new type of cache and then have people from all around the world set them up and YOU get credit for it." Yet, s4xton is upset that geoware and Jeremy are getting credit for Paklid's Mendota Earthcache. Would s4xton feel better if KB was CEO of www.earthache.org and received credit for Mendota Earthcache?

Isn't it just a little presumptuous and arrogant for s4xton to consider a cache like the Mendota Earthcache to be a geocachers "intellectual property?" Next thing we know we'll have sui generis taking legal action against earthcache.org on behalf of Paklid for stealing his earthcache patent rights. Yet, KB thinks its a "VERY cool idea" (if he received the "credit" for the efforts of others from all over the world).

s4xton, I had posed the question to Jeremy last week about how the person who created the cache would be able to answer the verification question emails if the profile link did not go to them. I think he is going to transfer them over at some point. I have seen that indicated in the general forums on Groundspeak as well. Hopefully he will in fact decide to do that and make the transition happen in the near future.
