It's time to vote! In this post you will find the caches which have been nominated to be the MnGCA February Cache of the Month.

Voting ends on February 28th. Rules for nominations Arrow here. Thanks to those who submitted nominations and to all voters!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nomination articles: (in the order they were received):
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1) BASS LAKE VISTA by eagleyes (nominated by: pogopod)

I have found over 600 caches and this one is in my top ten, it may be my favorite.

When I think about what I like about a cache, first, I think about challenge. this cache has it. The cache itself is nicely hidden but getting to it is a bit of work. You can hike in. Tough terrain makes it interesting and it is longer than the standard 3/10 mile from the parking lot, but the better way to get to it is to go by canoe. Northeast out of Winton you put in on Low Lake and portage into Bass Lake. If the wind is against you, it is a tough paddle and a tricky climb to the cache site.

Second I like to find caches that have other caches nearby. A little more hiking or paddling will get you to two more very nice cache locations, and Ely is filled with great caches.

Third I look for great locations. The attached picture does not do justice to the area. You are on the edge of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Minnesota does not get any more beautiful.

If you are in the Ely area, you can easily spend several days and not find all of the caches. Make sure you find this one. It will make your top ten list as well.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) A River Runs Thru by Zilla731 (nominated by: dachebo)

Pictures wont do this one justice so I wont be adding any. I also donít want to say too much about it so as to spoil the sense of surprise that, well... took me by surprise. Park in the suggested parking place and proceed towards the trail. Your GPSr may misguide you sometimes, but youíll find some remarkably breathtaking scenery, some decisions to make, and an opportunity to practice stealth. You donít have to do anything dangerous, unless you want to. Enjoy the hunt, I did. Here is my log from back in July to show how moved I was by this cache:

Wow! Awesome cache! Like a land that time forgot. Yet there are bike trails.....and an occasional bicyclist. Highest recommendations. (I mean it! Way cool cache, a must, for any serious geocacher.) I was away from home for only 50 minutes, but had my doubts about not getting lost in there. Took two foreign pennies, left bug spray. Thanks For The Cache!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3) The Get Sauced Event! by Silent Bob, JT, Kitch, King Boreas, (and various others) (nominated by: sui generis)

I will go out on a limb and nominate the recent "get sauced" event. Although it is an event cache, and is now over, there will be other get sauced events, which I feel makes the nomination fair game. These events are always a great deal of fun. You get to put faces behind all of the names, share caching stories, personally congratulate those who have left you stumped and or befuddled in search of their caches. Good food, good drink and good friends, with some night caching afterwards if you like. What could be better?

I visited Bass Lake Vista over a year ago, and there is no doubt in my mind that it should be a Cache of the Month. It requires a hike in like none I have ever seen. It took well over an hour to get the the cache hiking over some of the roughest terrain Minnesota has to offer.

But I'm sure my vote is for nought as the cache get very few visits as it is so far away from the metro. That sure is too bad.

I cannot vote but for one cache at this point in time. I DO have a month to get off my butt and go out to the other 2 caches, check them out and then make a decision. Unfortuatelly BASS LAKE VISTA is put up for the winter, and quite far.

The reason to have such a long time before voting ends is to visit the nominated caches, I think.

I haven't practiced this approach, but maybe now I will. In fact Lurch and I are going out today, and I just put "A river runs thru" in the GPS.

Do we actually have a winner for this, then? Does the "get sauced" event count?

Hate to bring up the subject again. I think that an event shouldn't be counted in on the COTM voting. Although I went to the "SB's Punch-out" on Saturday and had a great time other than my bum leg. These type of events limit the number of people being able to go due to being only a one day event, or being held during a week night. This gives everyone a chance to check the caches out. Thus I vote that in the future for COTM that it actually be a placed cache. Just putting in my $0.02 worth. I'll get off my high horse now.
